Shaw's in game tactics are really bad. He may think he's being risk averse, but limiting your own score is very risky. It may sound like a wash because BK's not a great gameday coach either. But Shaw has infinite time and little pressure to work these things out. And LSJU doesn't have to travel to away games in the Southeast like BK does.

What he has done this season is remarkable. One bad game just like Ohio State had. Just like Oklahoma had. Just like Clemson had. Just like Georgia had. Just like Auburn had. Just like Penn State had. We are a fantastic program. There is only one team in the country that is consistently winning every single game and playing good opponents. Notre Dame can beat any team in the country this year when they are on. Unfortunately it puts us out of the top four but this is still a top 10 team in the country for sure. People that expect us to go to the national championship game every single year are out of control. Unfortunately they were a little little shellshocked by the trashiness and illegal activity exhibited by Miami. The joke is on them in the long run

o none were big games. They were not undefeated or ranked number 7. Lou used to play those type of teams all the time n beat them. You have gotten so used to losing you think these are good big wins. Kelly has no big wins except Oklahoma in 2012. But he gVe it back with s shit show against OU in 2013

OP as long as you bring it up, what makes a Coach a top 5 head football coach?

Winning
Winning meaningful games
Winning championships

Those are 3 expectations about the particular coach that are the only reasons that that particular coach is hired over another coach.

Graduation rates, fund raising or any other criteria are secondary expectations that likely can be met by a slew of candidates.

So now, who are the top coaches?

Brian Kelly may be a top 5 coach in ND's history but he's nowhere near a Top 5 coach in the current landscape of CFB. Not. Even. Close. Unless of course you think that a .676 win % while in South Bend with ZERO meaningful (January 1 or better) Bowl wins in 7 full seasons qualifies him for such status. I might agree that he's Top 25 but it'd take some convincing based on objective data. The guy has had at least 4 losses in 5 of 7 seasons with the Irish. That'd get you fired at just about every single decent program.
