Kelly did a great job this year with all the injuries and yet people on here, especially the trolls and tools who have no idea how to play the game, cry every week. 10-2 with your third string QB is good at any level.

In terms of defense I am amazed that so many on here are completely delusional about the talent on that side of the ball. We have no secondary outside of Russell, who is hurt, and even he played average in some games. Our defensive linemen can't get a pass rush when Van Gorder blitzes 7 so what is he supposed to do when the front 4 have no shot?

Man I said this at the start of the season and I was at least hoping some players would improve but none did. If Max had actually turned out to be decent then maybe we wouldn't have so many issues but he has been a bust. Look at our recruiting classes the last 3 years and we haven't gotten any other big DB/safety recruits outside of Crawford and he was hurt before the year started. Unfortunately it looks like this year maybe the same, no top talent coming to South Bend.

Whatever, if some of you people had a clue you would blame the other coaches involved so go off on the defensive line, linebackers, and secondary coaches as well.

Don't rush 3 with the game on the line. Simple, basic football knowledge.

Blah blah blah....I've heard all the excuses before

First, we rushed three and had the initial play stopped if it wasn't for a stupid personal foul... but maybe that is on the coaches as well? If we had even an average secondary I would agree with you.

Don't blame the coaches? So the refs, or players? I don't care what we overcame! MSU is in the driver seat losing many playerd this year and their first round QB vs OSU. Grow up. The defense needs to be blown up.

JCF, you have to at least question Van Gorder. We give up big plays because of busted coverages every single game, even against crummy offensive teams. That alone would say you have to take a serious look at the DC. whatever he is, or is not, teaching is simply not resonating with the players. That falls on the coach

Anyone blaming coaches after all the injuries again after we won 10 is not a true fan. I would go further to say they are not real fans and are so stupid they do not realize how massive injuries to a team hurts on field performance. The fact that we ha e 10 wins is awesome! Go Irish and **** anyone that blames Kelly.

Not blaming Kelly outside of the (2) 2 point conversions and TO before we scored. I want the Defense aborted.

Yes the facts are excuses

All I am saying is that you can't lay everything on him if he doesn't have the talent.

Also the offense played like crap against those teams with "crummy" offenses like BC so you can't blame that on the defense can you? I mean do you think Ole Miss would have score 40 on Kirby Smart and Bama if that offense didn't have 5 turnovers in that game? It goes the same with our team, you can't turn the ball over!

Oh and lastly don't forget the turnover before the first half ended... will you blame Kelly or BVG for Kizer's poor decision? Any smart JV high school QB would have understood we were in field goal range so don't fumble the damn ball! He is young and will learn but you can't blame coaches for that stuff... not to mention some of the terrible dropped passes as well.

Not his fault. Its CB and SS coach..

So, you're giving the defense a pass because the offense didn't put up 35 on the #1 defense? Really?

I'm a big Kelly fan but it is clear the defense is not where it needs to be after two years under BVG. Time for a change. It just isn't working. As far as talent, Sheldon Day and Jaylon Smith are both first round NFL talent (and Russell is NFL caliber). Other than that? We have some promising young guys - and enough talent to be better than we were this year. We haven't had a big time safety since Zeke Motta and we need to develop one... Here is hoping Drew Tranquil can do it... I'm beginning to worry that Redfield will never live up to his 5* status -- I hope he proves me wrong.

But we need a new coach on D. Who is BC's defensive coordinator. They played with attitude and solid fundamentals. Best D we faced all year.

Except for Red Zone breakdowns I though our offense was the best it has been under Kelly. I mean we had two Freshman in the backfield!

Win our bowl game and then retool for next year! Go Irish. Heads up.

JCF, I don't want to give the offense a pass either, I'm with you there, but needing to hold a lead with 25 seconds to go, and you give up a long pass AGAIN falls squarely on the defense. Another busted coverage resulting in a big chunk play. I just saw this year so many times where there are blown coverages. That's a coaching problem

No talent. Morgan ,Vaughn, Elliott ,etc. all will be great compared to what we've had. D coordinator seems to be our weak link. Invest in top of the line D coordinator who will play with our strongest talent and ND will be at the top again. Unless that happens, ND will be the bridesmaid and not the bride.

Totally agree!

Thank you Notre Dame football team for great season. Notre Dame's CB and SS are stink. ND player # 12 is wimp.

Great has a new definition now? Did we beat Bama or something? I would say its good (not great) season only if we win our bowl game. Otherwise its no different than 10-3 season charlie had where we lose to everyone with pulse but beat up on temple, BC, Wake and so on.

ND has one good win this year (against USC)

So many here are talking defense, but ND's two biggest problems are red zone offense and clock management.

Going back to the 2012 team the Red Zone offense has been atrocious. Every season BK talks about how important it is and what they've done to fix it but nothing changes. This team leaves a lot of points on the field every week, absolutely alarming and disgraceful.

Clock management is a huge deficiency as well, what is the problem with so many wasted and ill advised TOs. Why call a TO with 1st an goal at the two with 30 seconds? That is a ton of time to work with, no need to rush at the LOS.

Any time you score 36, you should win.

This I agree with on both points. Until Kelly trusts a power run game in the redzone, nothing will change. I was screaming at my TV when the timeout was taken

Completely agree with you. I was actually amazed when Kizer took some snaps under center, I didn't even realize Kelly had those in the play book. The one play that should be thrown in the trash is that stupid stretch run, I can't remember ever seeing us get yardage on that play. We have a talented young RB and I really hope next season, when Malik returns, that Kelly runs more read option plays similar to Ohio St.

I will say this about Kelly and it is a negative, he reminds me a lot of that other Kelly with the Eagles in terms of being stubborn in his play making decisions. Again though, he isn't out there fumbling, throwing the terrible int's, or dropping passes this year. I remember last night a play where Fuller dropped an easy bomb from Kizer and they showed Kelly's face, he just looked so frustrated and I don't blame him. I mean Fuller is the best player we have on offense and even he has made some terrible drops the past year, especially last night. That is one of the reasons I don't blame Kizer that much, besides the fact he is young, because he makes a poor choice but then when he is on target these guys drop passes left and right.

We need a250 lb. fullback at goal line to block or power it in. Damn,Henry at Bama is 247.

That is an entirely different type of offense but I don't see why Kelly couldn't add plays for short yardage/goal line drives. The Pats and Chargers in the NFL are good examples of this, mainly run that shotgun spread like we do but they get under center as well and it would be a welcome site!
