247 updated it's rankings post The Opening, as I'm sure Rivals, Scout and ESPN will do as well in the near future.

Two notable risers from the event...

Jayson Ademilola jumped well inside the top 100 to #46 overall. He'll be in 5 star discussion if he has an excellent senior season.

Cameron McGrone jumped 197 spots to #40 overall. Will also be in contention for a 5th star at season's end.

Kevin Austin jumped 180 spots to #119 overall and looks to make his way into the top 100.

On the flip side,

Phil Jurkovec is down to #99 overall and fighting to stay in the top 100.

Derrik Allen fell out of the top 100 entirely and now ranks #121 overall.

Recruiting is fluid folks. Both in terms of where kids are leaning, where they're ranked, the politics that go into ranking them, etc, etc... This is why we can't freak out in the spring. It's a wait-and-see game. At least we know ND is targeting highly thought of guys.

Gotta love the politics and the product selling here...

Derrik Allen, a boring recruitment who is firm with Notre Dame, falls despite putting up a great performance, yet Cameron McGrone, jumps well above linebackers like Dallas Gant, Dax Hollifield, Teradja Mitchell and others... Why?

Partially because he's a damn good player, as we've known all along... But don't think for a second that it also doesn't have to do with the fact that he's uncommitted, is going to be a player of high interest between ND and Michigan fans and will drives clicks and views.

Look at how many committed guys moved down, vs uncommitted guys who soared up the rankings... This is why I keep telling some of you guys who are infinitely loyal to recruiting rankings that you have to consider the politics in ranking these players as well. This is why to me, beyond the first 20-30 players, it doesn't matter whether or not you're getting a guys ranked let's say #46 or #146. Chances are that if you did a study of all the players ranked in those two ranges, the "hit rate" for both would be similar.

Give me all the 5 stars I can get. After that, realize that if you land a composite 150-200 player, that's a very good get.

I saw them and had a huge problem with the fact that guys at the Opening who did well (Allen was graded out an A-) lost spots to guys who weren't there & have done nothing to be evaluated on? So sitting at home doing nothing moves you up past guys competing against the best and doing well?

Also, I don't see how Franklin didn't make the top 247 seeing how guys he outperformed in person are in it?

There were 166 total players there (including a lot of 2019 recruits) so how can guys who were there & performed well not be even 4 Stars?

Politics and money my man. The two things that drive almost everything. Committed kids don't drive clicks and subscriptions. Uncommitted kids do.

You better believe all the recruiting sites were giddy that Justin Fields outperformed Trevor Lawrence at the event. It's so much better for business to have the #1 overall player be uncommitted so that subscribers can cling to their phones and tablets to see if their school has a chance!!!

Just look at the top 30 players alone. Nearly all the guys that moved up, are uncommitted, while the majority of those that moved down, are committed. They're not "fun" anymore. They're boring...

Yeah. I knew Fields was going to #1 as soon as he decommitted & performed well.

I had a chance to ask Coach D from BGI about Jurkovec & his answer was interesting. Basically said he loves events & camps because that's what they do, but poo-poo'd on the notion that they lower/higher great game performers in pads.

So live bullets are still superior to paintballs when evaluating players.

I use to work with Bryan and we have talked a couple times since that time. Great guy and knows his football. We've always had excellent discussions.

I believe that people like Coach D and myself are on the same page. We both coached at the college level. Our evaluations come from film. But he knows, just as well as I do that the higher ups that make business decisions do so less about accuracy and grading, and more about money and politics. You have to remember that some of the people contributing to ranking players never even coached football at a high level and, therefore, don't understand the process coaches use to evaluate.

Bryan gets film. He's a good football guy. He's not infallible, none of us are. He had Josh Barajas ranked as the #1 player in ND's class one year and said he saw shades of Jaylon in him. Hell, last year I said that ND's D-line would be fine and that Isaac Rochell would have 7+ sacks and be a top 2-3 round pick.... Bryan was dead wrong. As was I... But I think good football people are right more often than they are wrong and I think Bryan is an excellent football guy. Good dude on top of it.

sometimes the formats of these gatherings favor certain prospects. Guys whose forte is a big physical intimidating game will not shine as much as the guys displaying speed and pure athleticism. Being an actual football player sometimes takes a backseat to 'the show'.

Oh absolutely. Let's not pretend for a second that just because a guy shows excellent coverage skills in a camp, that it automatically means he'll step up and hit somebody in run support as well. Both important qualities for a DB but only one is on display in a camp format such as The Opening.

Years ago nothing got me more fired up than seeing Chris Martin blow by OL in shorts and a t-shirt at these camps, unfortunately his career at ND was not the same highlight video..........

Ding ding ding! Recruiting rankings is a business. Kids lose glamor after committing early I guess.. not right

I agree there are some politics involved regarding rankings. which is why I agree looking at an accumulative measure like "composite rankings" probably gives a more accurate indicator of how a recruit measures up relative to his peers. But let's not get too carried away here. These services reputations are on the line. Accuracy is way more important than anything else. They are not going to sellout their brand's reputation for more clicks on aggregate .. maybe if two recruits are viewed as equal .. the guy with the bigger schools chasing him will get a slight bump -- it doesn't make any logical sense for it to be much more than that though.
