We saw the value it had when Ohio State leapfrogged both TCU and Baylor for the fourth spot because the Big 10 had a playoff game and the Big 12 didn't.
For Notre Dame, that means it pretty much has to go unbeaten during the regular season to make the 4-team Playoff. Considering the Irish have gone unscathed in the regular season only three times in the last 65 years (1973, 1988 and 2012, or once per 22 years), that's a tall order.
Either ND has to seriously consider going full-time in football too into the ACC (which is looking into a "best two" for its playoff instead of automatically Atlantic winner versus Coastal winner), or the 4-team Playoff has to expand where all five Power 5 winners are included, as well as potentially an independent and an at-large bid(s). http://www.cbssports.com/collegefoo...2-will-probably-move-toward-championship-game
