At what point does building depth become an excuse?

Total offense ranked 32 out of 125 teams is very good!

and our 26 turnovers was something like 108 out of 125 teams and that's awful.

If you don't think that our turnovers and poor RZ play last year were not contributing factors in a number of our losses, then we will have to agree to disagree. IMO, turnovers were a huge contributing factor in the ASU and NW loss especially.

Much much more on defense.

Maybe so but the discussion was how our offense performed and IMO, while the scored a lot of points they gave the opposition a short field a lot, especially ASU where you could hang 21 of those points on the offense.

I understand your point, and like I said I think we just disagree. While the offense scored a lot, IMO, they did the worst thing you can do when you have a weak defense and that's turn the ball over.

Can't disagree with any of this. Kelly is a very polarizing figure and most don't like his offense. I think the majority of the blame for the disappointing season was on the defense largely in part due to injuries. Lastly to think Sanford is going to have a great impact on the offense is silly. He has the OC title but is simply a QB coach for now.

Which was my worry and why I think this may be Kelly's last year, which I think is unfortunate. I think Kelly has been an excellent HC but I just feel the offense would have been much better if we would have hired an OC 5 years ago and has cost us games.

I also think ND loses out by having BK focusing so much time on offense because he has shown that when he get's involved in recruiting a kid we stand a great chance of getting him.

This is what pains me so much regarding Kelly, I just see what could be if he'd just step aside as OC and focus entirely on being the HC. He has done a tremendous job in every other aspect of building the program I really believe that ND could have won 10+ games in 2011-2014 if the offense would have been better. I really believe that if Kelly had been involved at a high level only on offense and defense he could have helped BVG, maybe giving him a different view and ideas that he didn't see, same on offensive side of the ball.

Sadly, I think that if the offense doesn't fix the issues that have plagued it for 5 years we could be looking at another 8 win season and I don't think BK will survive that, which is disappointing because I'm not sure we will hire someone better.

I'm not a BK hater, he was my choice over Stoops 5 years ago, I just think BK the OC is going to get the best HC we have had in LONG time fired.

I took alot of heat last year when I called on sitting Golson following two games of ridiculous turnovers. Kelly hung with him until the bowl game and we saw how that turned out. Most of those losses down the stretch were on Kelly, imo....What good is a bench when it isn't used?

Don't think there is any chance that another 8-5 season would get Kelly fired. It would warm his seat but that is all. Also don't think that this team will go 8-5.

I like Kelly and I like the kind of program building changes he has brought to ND. We are finally to the point where we have excellent talent at most positions and very good depth as well, and it has taken seemingly a long time to get here. Building depth can no longer be an excuse for the way we practice or scheme, etc... This should be the start of sustainable 10 plus win seasons.

Maybe not this year but with his current recruiting you can bet we will be back to an 8-5 team the year after and the year after that, etc. This year may be a 1 hit wonder unless he finds a way to F7ck it up

If an 8-5 season doesn't get him fired then I'm afraid that the administration has spoken loud and clear; As long as the revenue keeps coming in they are not concerned about results.

Glad you aren't making decisions for ND.

The revenue was coming in just fine when Faust, Davie, Willingham and Weis were fired too. So maybe that has nothing to do with it.

Davie and TW were terrible Head Coaches; Weis was pissing of the alums and was a terrible Head Coach.
Kelly is not a terrible Head Coach; if he goes 8-5 again, then he is still not a terrible Head Coach, but he is not a Top Tier Head Coach neither.
