I couldn't agree with coach any more. What kind of a pussy ass message would it send to your players "we aren't confident enough in you to play the defense we have played all year cuz we're scared of these WRs. We will go zone instead." The players would be pissed. We are who we are. Trust the players to make plays. Get physical as hell with Smith. The reffs arent gonna call every hold or PI . If they do call some its only 15 yards and trust the defnese to bow their backs and make up for it. Eff these guys. I am so sick of hearing about Smith and Egbuka and Tate. Eff them. Stop the run. Battle your ass off in coverage. possess the football, be good in the kicking game. that will give ya a chance to be in any ballgame near the end. Bring it on Bitch!

Agreed. Did someone challenge his manhood or something? It didn't work against USC, that is fair to say, and they have a potent passing offense and blue chip WRs. So there is that precedent for ND being torched through the air this season. Maybe Louisville stung us a bit, Tyler Shough is a pretty good QB.

But what else would we even do, that's what we're comfortable doing. That's what we're trained for. Live by the sword die by the sword. And we lived by it all the way to the finals, only two teams left.

perfectly said by you here. Why would we do anything else. Yeah and we did get torched by USC but we also made the ultimate play that had to be made when it mattered. Smith will get some big plays on us and so will egbuka and tate. Why wouldnt they? they are great players too. Our guys will win some plays too and make some big plays as well defensively.

Reading the Ohio st board. The chatter there is they know our secondary is good.
They believe they are going to run all over us then setup the pass game off the run. They know cross isn’t 100 percent and mills is out making us undersized.

Can we hold up ?

One good thing about man to man is it frees up a player to help out in Run D. Play your three best man to man players and then bring in an extra LB to attack the run.

We can't afford to get 10 or 14 points behind early. The advantages that OSU has...and they have them....should not be enhanced with ND having to come from behind like we did against PSU. Just because ND adjusted and made up for that deficit doesn't mean we can duplicate it against a better team. Keep the game close.....make it an 8 minute game in the 4th quarter....I like our chances in that scenario. If we are leading in the 4th quarter.....pin the ears back and go fishing in a barrel.

Perfectly said.

But DBs backs are turned Howard in run game or if backs break front 7- you are in trouble .

actually it will likely be a front 8 some of the time; a very risky D but we might have no choice but to gamble more than we want. we cannot play it safe against this OSU offense.
We are going to have to shoot gaps a lot; which will also allow us to bring pressure on Howard. Yeah we can get burned; and probably will. Its all a crap shoot.

Will Howard will turn the ball over. ND is going to heat him up as long as they keep him in good passing situations. 3 and 5 or more or 2 and 7 are good looks for ND.

Exactky, we have to keep in mind that WIll Howard has to be accurate if we are in man. Maybe he will be, maybe he will be off on some throws and we know our guys are capable of making plays. Like you said we gotta heat his ass up tho

Will Howard has been very accurate this year and excellent under pressure

I don't know, I feel like he's vulnerable, and can be exploited by good DBs. He's a good QB, but he's vulnerable.
Here's his numbers on the year

  • Not blitzed: 190/266 (71.4%), 2,418 yards (9.1 per attempt), 18 TD, 9 INT
  • Blitzed:101/136 (74.3%), 1,354 yards (10.0 per attempt), 15 TD, 1 INT
ND plays a lot of man coverage and they blitz a lot. It's schematically a really bad matchup for ND.

So much of pass defense, man or zone, is dependent upon the defensive line and the pass rush.

The key is to not give the quarterback more than three seconds

Big10 Defensive Rankings:
1/ PSU (held OSU to 20, ND needs to keep it around this number to win).
2/ ****eyes
3/ Illinois
4/ USC

what this means is he gets the ball out quickly; BUT man to man if you have the horses you can make him pay

ND might have the very best secondary in the league. Looking forward to seeing if all of these young guys/low 4 star prospects at CB/DB at Notre Dame can hang vs some of the best WRs in the country/a 5-star laden WR corps at OSU with a QB (Will Howard) that can get them the ball with high efficiency.

All I meant is it looks like he throws risky passes sometimes, just randomly. But I'm not real familiar with tOSU football, and the only game I really watched was the Michigan game, and then these playoff games, which is what I'm basing such a speculation on. And not his season long statistical profile.

Thanks Bucknut but no one here cares.......Why are you here?

Our speed off the edges has to be turbo charged. There has to be a trade off: sacks, turnovers and hurries in exchange for big plays. And it has to be a favorable trade off. We saw that against PSU and Georgia. OSU has to pay a big price tag for big plays. I am convinced that they will get them....they just have to pay dearly for them otherwise. On our side, the O line must give RL that extra second on pass plays, so he doesn't throw the pick. And they have to open holes. OSU's defense is quicker than anything we've seen this year. How ND establishes a balanced offensive attack is the ball game....because OSU is going to score points. I don't know of ND can score 30 points in this game....but OSU can. We have to play in the teens or 20s to win, imo. If special teams and defense can produce 7 to 14 points...the offense can find the other 10 to 14 that will be needed. One point more is all it is going to take.

That’s how the Lions approached defense last night. We are going to do what got us here. 🤷‍♂️

I hope Al is bullshitting. Michigan player zone.

Id expect alot of what OSU did vs Oregon in Rose Bowl. I think they are going to get Smith in motion and try short outs and crosses to get him going early then try to hit us deep. I hope we show man early but play zone and sit on those routes and get an early int.

You’re not a fan of Notre Dame, go somewhere else !

If ND can keep the run game in check and get pressure on the QB they will have a chance. I will also say OSU will be coming hard after RL. Screens , draws and misdirection plays would be a good thing to use. OSU has some game breakers. But ND does as well and I think people are totally overlooking that. As good as OSU is and has been playing, I do not get the sense ND is intimidated. ND has to play their style , minimize mistakes. Whatever happens they have to fight for a full 60 minutes.

Do you understand english? Do you go on bucknut boards?
You know exactly the effin' reason why he's here, why this tOSU fan has logged onto to this free ND message board open to the general public. So if you want to tell him off, think of something better to say. It's just stupid. Hmm, let me think, because the national championship game is two days away and ND and tOSU are both in it? Sure, yeah, that's why he's here.

And no, I've never made a post on an tOSU board. But I could and if I did right now today everyone would know the reason. They would know what prompted the sudden interest.

If only your beloved bk was still at ND.... Why don't you go to the LSU board and be with your bff?

PSU defense is faster and quicker on the defensive line. Back 7 edge as far as players might go to OSU as far as talent.

Detroit's defense was devastated by injuries; its pass rush gone. So they probably should have tried something else. IF they had been healthy that would have been a very different game. and you might remember the FIVE TURNOVERS Detroit had as well as a Pick 6.
That is called the Rest of the Story
