He takes a ton of crap, but mid way through year two, with no huge defensive recruits, he's controlled OSU (TWICE) and a USC team averaging 50.

Yes he's made mistakes (double safety fire) but give this man credit for building a very good defense...mostly through scheme and secondary (unheard of at ND).

I'm sure NFL teams are looking at him, but I hope we get to see him for a couple more seasons.

Ya I’m happy he’s on our staff even though he’s made some pretty egregious errors. He clearly knows scheme very well though

He crafted a good game plan and he called a good game and he deserves credit for both

Thanks to Golden for winning this game. If we didn’t have him, we’d be 4-4 without question.

His D has played well all year and kept us in every game. It was tough at L'ville, but they made it a game to the 4th.

We have played 2, top 10 teams and I would bet we are still a top 5 D. Hard to do.

I really wanted them to score, a 55-20 would have been so nice and maybe the D gets another pick or fumble after the kick off.

Agree. I’ve been tough on golden. He’s good to stay as long as he wants in my book. I absolutely loved the game plan last night on D. Wish we play every week like that. We brought pressure all might from everywhere.
It forced turnovers and make the heisman trophy winner uncomfortable and average looking. Kudos to golden and the D

One of the commentators (I forget which one) mentioned last night that Golden had told him he was going to use a similar game plan to what the Bengals did against Maholmes, when they beat the Chiefs in the AFC championship game, when Golden was on their staff. Obviously, the plan worked great. Kudos to Golden and the D.

I heard the exact same thing. It was a great game plan. We got pressure and the D was playing fast. It was exciting to watch.

He is a very good coach. Hope he stays around but think he is going back to NFL sooner than later.

Get this guy some higher level dlinemen and it would be very interesting to watch.

And before anyone blows up, I like our dlinemen, but we are missing guys with that IT factor. One or two on this line would make a huge difference

Totally agree. The stat that really jumps out to me is our improvement in defending the red zone. We were among the worst in college football last year, and among the best this year. Really amazing when you consider the absence of any stand out star in our DL. When he took the job he said he didn’t return to the college game, he returned because it was ND. Hope he still feels this way and Freeman should lock him up for multiple years.

ND should open their wallets to make sure he stays.....that's of course if he wants to

Golden is not a weak link in this staff.
👍👍

And then what happens to the compensation paid to the other assistants ?

While I agree that we should try to retain him you have to be careful not to upset the compensation Apple Cart

New TV contract and under armor should easily cover.

Right now Golden and Mickens should be treated like top assistants I'm the country for defense...as should mcoulough (sp) on offense.

I wouldnt treat Golden like that. Hes been great this year but he doesn't love to recruit. And how is his defense going to run when he doesn't have so many 4th to 6th year guys running it

I think he's a big scheme heavy guy. I wouldn't hate a player driven, less complicated, get your best athletes on the field type coach and just let them run and eat

I wouldnt be upset at all of Golden came back, he's a very good coach. But I wouldn't be devastated if he left either

Every system change loses recruits, assistants, buy in from existing players, and potentially changes recruiting priorities.

We have a very good defense. Let's keep it instead of setting the program back two years

Having a coaching change doesn't equal setting the program back 2 years. Elite programs churn out good coaches all the time. It's part of the deal

He's not irreplaceable

I dont think defensive recruits are signing to play for Al Golden. It's more of a MF and position coach type thing. Recruiting wouldn't slow down. It may improve

What's ND abdomen $18.9 billion?
I guess I don't see your point

Our defense had been really good since 17

Coaching changes have not set the program back

Elko to Lea to Freeman to Golden all have been mostly highly successful

I have several points.

Number one is that it’s easy for you to spend someone else’s money.

Number two is that throwing money around to a particular coach and/or executive is disruptive to the organization in general. It leads to more chaos within the organization

Number three, there are no secrets and the other coaches will become disgruntled upon learning that a coach is being paid at a much higher level than they are.

Number four, how do you know that you don’t have an over paid, bloated payroll ?

it seems apparent that you’ve never run a company

Well if my company has an abdomen of that size to pay someone their worth is a non issue at a place where it's hard to get elite players to qualify academically on that side of the ball would be money well spent
Seeing he is the head of the defensive side the ball his underlings can appreciate that
I doubt the first yr OC will be upset especially with the lack of performance....I don't even know my if he'll be the IC next season m.
I even doubt MF would be upset considering not having worry about that side of the ball is probably a gift for a young coach at such a high pressure university
I haven't run a company, but I ran a division in a very large company and I made sure the people that were valuable in the department were compensated......and was never told no for the elevation in pay, or bonuses

He’s responsible for getting them as well

Your reply doesn’t address the particular issues that ND faces.

First, are you telling us that your department didn’t have a budget ?

Do you believe that dramatically increasing the compensation of the assistant coaches/coordinators will guarantee improved results ?

There’s a marked difference between past performance and future performance.

Past performance is easy to identify, future performance not so much so.

What about the people who weren’t valuable, how did you deal with them ?

1-I'm telling you with an endowment that size you can figure out whether you can afford to kerp the DC whose done a very good job as too trying to find a replacement for a defensive unit that is going to be familiar' and comfortable in.
2-That would be up to the DC/
3A-There's no crystal ball, but his past performance is why we are having this conversation
3B-Agree
4-See 2

The problem with your solution is the disruptive impact it would have on the other staff and on the compensation structure in general.

While I agree on rewarding performance i‘m cautious when people think that just throwing money at a problem, solves that problem.

The area where we agree is that it’s the football program that supports/funds almost every other athletic program, ergo the football program should be a priority.

‘’Question, what if your DC or OC is beyond spectacular, should they be paid more than the HC ?
