From Wynnewood, Pa., Friends Central School, this is a rather unusual off-the-radar commit for Muffet McGraw's powerhouse.
Over the past four years, seldom has ND not signed a top-25 caliber player. All three of last year's freshmen (Marina Mabrey, Arike Ogunbowale and Ali Patberg, who was injured as a frosh) were McDonald's All-Americans. Incoming recruits Erin Boley and Jackie Young were likewise — and they were National Players Of The Year by either the Gatorade or Naismith outlets. However, they also were all wings or guards. ND's priority in the 2017 recruiting cycle is to sign two bigs, especially because All-American Brianna Turner will be in her senior year by the time that freshman class arrives.
An excellent student also recruited by the Ivy League, Vaughn has career averages of 15.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game in 78 high school contests. A year ago, she was ranked among the top 25 prospects national by ESPN HoopsGurlz, and was visited last September by the Irish stuff. But her rating has plummeted. She is not in the ESPN Top 60 (which is all they rank), and after being 59th in Prospects Nation, she no longer is listed in their top 100.
She posted the following on Twitter “Extremely blessed to announce that I have decided to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Notre Dame. Thank you to all of the school(s) that have taken the time to recruit me because it means a lot to my family and me. Can’t wait to be a part of the Fighting Irish.”
Other "bigs" the Irish are recruiting: Wisconsin's 6-4 Sidney Cooks (ranked No. 6 by ESPN), New York's 6-3 Danielle Patterson (No. 11), Texas' 6-4 Jade Williams (No. 13), Georgia's 6-3 Maya Dodson (No. 20), and Florida's 6-3 LaDazhia Williams (No. 43).
Notre Dame also is recruiting 6-1 Lauryn Miller from Missouri — daughter of 1983-86 wideout Alvin Miller, Parade's 1982 Player of the Year. At wing, they also are after the nation's No. 1 overall prospect, Virginia's Megan Walker, who is obviously interested in UConn.
