There are a lot of reasons for ND's poor season. The hiring of BVG was a mistake. ND hasn't recruited the quality or numbers needed at the DL position to compete at an elite level. The offense has become predictable and this year ND didn't have the game breaker, Will Fuller, to bail them out. Defenses didn't have to respect the deep ball as much and when needed could crowd the line of scrimmage to either shut down the run or the short passing game. Special teams continue to be anything but special. Disastrous might be a better word. ND hasn't established an identity as a football team. I just watched Vandy (VANDY!!!) beat Ole Miss and TN the last two weeks. They do not have great athletes on defense, but they swarm tackle. And I mean tackle (wrap up and not just try to knock someone off their feet). Football is a game of emotion and I don't see that at ND. I'm not the guy to get into the larger challenges such as recruiting restrictions because the athletic dept. doesn't control that. They don't control the weather either and besides, OSU, MI and WI don't seem to let the weather stop them from recruiting.
