How did we get here? Let's have a reality conversation. Not just fire the coach! Does ND culture need to change? Will a new coach fix this? Is the goal to win a NC? College football has changed so much. 4-8 is not acceptable. Let's dig deep into the root problems.

culture is a big factor.

Young people view things as more immediate. They do not put stock in some 40 year plan.
Immediate gratification and the shortest route to that gratification has changed things.

ND's culture of 40-50 years ago is just not resonating with the majority of elite athletes that intend sports as the occupation of 1st choice.

how I long for those 8-5 teams

8 and 5 ? I know your kidding. but I can tell u 8 - 5 or 9- 4 or even 10- 3 (when u get blown out in your bowl game to make it 10-3 ). is so disappointing.

Even seasons like that for ND feel like failures for me.

Give me some 10-2 seasons with a bowl win in a good Bowl to finish 11-2. now that would be a fantastic season.

There are a lot of reasons for ND's poor season. The hiring of BVG was a mistake. ND hasn't recruited the quality or numbers needed at the DL position to compete at an elite level. The offense has become predictable and this year ND didn't have the game breaker, Will Fuller, to bail them out. Defenses didn't have to respect the deep ball as much and when needed could crowd the line of scrimmage to either shut down the run or the short passing game. Special teams continue to be anything but special. Disastrous might be a better word. ND hasn't established an identity as a football team. I just watched Vandy (VANDY!!!) beat Ole Miss and TN the last two weeks. They do not have great athletes on defense, but they swarm tackle. And I mean tackle (wrap up and not just try to knock someone off their feet). Football is a game of emotion and I don't see that at ND. I'm not the guy to get into the larger challenges such as recruiting restrictions because the athletic dept. doesn't control that. They don't control the weather either and besides, OSU, MI and WI don't seem to let the weather stop them from recruiting.

This is complete bullshit. ND has plenty of talent, that's not the issue. And blanket statements about an entire generation is asinine

keep in mind....Notre Dame has been through five coaches since running Lou off....and that includes O'Leary. There are obviously issues that need addressed specific to Notre Dame. However, I am one who believes the right coach could still be successful under current conditions. I prefer, however....a win-win.....the right guy with some review of the program requirements.

BVG
No #1 qb in fall camp
No offensive identity
Lack of toughness
Lack of defensive talent and development
Injured rbs making oline look worse then they are

We are 4-8 because we have good players with poor fundamentals who play with uneven energy throughout the game, make fundamental mistakes game after game and are not held accountable, play calling is head scratching, and for entire Kelly regime we have been stuck in way too many close games (can't put lesser teams away) and this year it caught up with us big time. Even in 2012 at 12-0 we barely squeaked by mediocre Pitt and BYU and terrible Purdue teams.

Good post College football defense is an oxymoron. Nobody plays it.
OL was not only over rated but simply bad
W/O Fuller, needed to rely on young guys. StBrown and Stepherson and Claypool will be excellent.
Major drop off at TE. Used to be TE U!
Overall weak defense with a VERY weak DL
Finally no Manti's or Jaylon's or Fullers---ZERO difference makers either side of the ball
