What are your predictions? And why ?

I think we could beat a few of those teams by more. Don't you?[/B] How about Fleck for the cherry on top of your whipped cream?

No I don't.. 2017 is going to be very similar to 2012 in that the Irish will win with a conservative offense ( breaking in a new qb) and a dominating defense. Fleck will go to Michigan when Harbaugh leaves for the Bears.

Bodi, an undefeated season followed by a blow out loss to Alabama is more success than I expect. A 10-2 season with losses to Stanford and Miami is my guess for the best possible outcome, and a win over Michigan in a decent bowl. Kelly is reinvigorated by the team success and contributions of his younger coordinators, and stays for two more 10 plus win seasons. Elko delivers a respectable defense that plays hard and aggressive and disruptive, and they are a pleasure to watch. Long delivers an offense that is far less predictable, one that utilizes a short yardage under center package for short yardage situations, and Wimbush is the best dual threat QB we've had. Kelly calls all the offensive plays and surprises with the run/pass balance, but the offense style still places too much on field workload on the defense. Recruiting is more successful with much better balance, and Elko is promoted to Associate head coach after his second season, and becomes the heir apparent; while Long gains Kelly's trust and becomes the primary play caller with great success. All possible but unlikely unless this past season has humbled Kelly enough to cause some serious self assessment and commitment to change. A tall order.
Welcome back Bodi!

Welcome back Bodi!
That would be a great season.

After this past season it's hard to predict anything, but what we already know

With so many changes on the coaching staff in key positions , and a new QB with no experience, and what looks to be another pass happy offense I would think an 8 win season is a success.

I'm not saying acceptable, but this is ND football as we know it

The rally cry will be re build 2017
Reload 2018

I would hope that Jack would let Kelly go if we finish 8-4 next season, but I feel we are being set up to think this will represent a great turnaround. Think about it: an 8-4 record this past season would have been disappointing given expectations, and another 8-4 season next year would mean back to back disappointing seasons, and cause for Kelly's firing. Instead, we're looking at a pathetic 4-8 record this past season that Jack Waxed positive about their character and effort, etc... effectively lowering the bar for next season. I say both Kelly and Jack should be let go if we win less than ten games during the regular season.

8-4, or above Coach Kelly will not be let go unless those loses all come at the end of the season

Before answering your question, tell us what your predictions were before the beginning of the 2016 season for the Irish?

I doubt they will. They'll sell it as such great improvement over 2016 and how Kelly building the program. It will buy them 1 more year and that means less money they will have to spend to buy him out.

As long as they can keep the fans spending money on ND football they will never make any real changes.... it's all about the money

8 wins. No signature wins with a bowl loss to a mid level team. We done.

I know I posted this in another thread, but I fear this is what football purgatory looks like
You're probably right, but realistically, we're not going 12-0 next season and playing in the playoff. At this point, lets win the games we're supposed to win, and get BW prepared to be a championship level QB. Get things stabilized, win 8 or 9 games next year and win your Bowl Game. Then the year after, maybe you're prepared to win 10 or 11 games, and a Major Bowl Game.

Notre Dame will only be successful if they learn how to tackle and play defense, which is what they used to do when they were a powerhouse.
Brian Kelley is an offensive coordinator and belongs in the NFL as an offensive coordinator - he is no longer a viable college coach.
My prediction is that he will loose 5 game this year and leave before he is fired. Some coaches are great at one thing, for example in Kelly's situation that is offense.
There is only one coach that can come in and fix this problem, and he is at Ohio State.

Dip...I don't disagree with your conclusion, but I sure as hell don't like it. Let's hope for a ten win season that takes this conversation off the table for at least another year.

Telex,
I am with you in your hope, but I am in agreement with Poet in his 8 / 4 pick. Kelly is a 4 to 5 loss coach.
So I wish Bodi is right ? I at least hope you are correct ? But I think that Poet is the more realistic !
.

"There is only one coach that can come in and fix this problem, and he is at Ohio State."

No thanks!

San Diego Chargers? BTW, didn't the Chargers just hirer a new coach?

After last year, who knows? With a questionable defensive line, lack of speed at the LB position and a new QB, ND will have to play near perfection to have a 10+ win season. There are NO gimmes this year. Not after what we saw last year. However, Temple, BC, Miami OH., NC State, WF and Navy are teams the Irish should beat with talent alone. The Irish have the talent to beat NC and MI St. too, but given last year, these will be toss ups. GA, USC, Miami FL and Stanford will match or exceed the Irish overall from a talent standpoint. Win all of the first 8 games mentioned and any of the last four and the Irish will have made a solid turnaround. Lose the last four mentioned and split NC and MI St., and the Irish really haven't accomplished anything.

One other thing to factor in is inconsistency of the referees. If you play every game close and squander red zone opportunities you leave the game in the wrong hands. How many times have we seen this?

There is no longer a "San Diego" Charger team which casts doubt on the credibility of your entire prediction.....

Kelly turns things around and ND goes 8-5 in 2017.

? interesting that that is a 'turn around' !

7-5 and a bowl W
or
8-4 and a bowl L

(Keys to the season: how many games missed by Morgan, D Hayes, and Wimbush miss due to injury. These 3 would seem irreplaceable at their respective positions. So what is the likelihood that they will go through the season injury free?)

I could only find NFL injury stats. Every starter has about a 4% chance of being hurt per game. That means each player has about a 40% chance to get hurt sometime during the first 12 games. So, 60% x 60% x 60% = 21% chance that none of the three are hurt during the regular season.

And the average injury keeps a player out for three games.
