Tomorrow represents everything that is the "good" of college basketball and the "bad" of what college basketball, as well as college football is all about. In one corner you have a program making a Final Four run with a coach who has a track record of graduating everyone who comes thru his program. On the other you have a program that is allowed by NCAA rules to have 6-7-8 players who don't even have to go to class. And if this program wins 2 more games they will be given a plaque that says National COLLEGIATE Athletic Association champions. The only thing Collegiate about Kentucky is that they have players that are of college age...Do not try and tell me that they are STUDENT-ATHLETES.

And don't take this as a slam against the Kentucky kids...they are only doing what the money grubbing NCAA is allowing them to do. Duke has turned into the same kind of program...the NCAA makes 88% of its operating budget of this tournament...the only thing they care about is the $$$$...it's time to put an end to this mess and start a "Minor-League" of sorts for kids who want to get paid to play right away.

It is also the reason I sooooo wanted ND to be put in another region...not to get away from playing UK, you were going to have to do it sometime anyway, but so that I didn't have to watch UK play...it disgusts me that some kid like Darius Jackson is running across a snow covered ND campus to make an 8 oclock class while some guy at UK is sleeping in a cozy apartment. Yet both players are considered "Student Athletes." The NCAA is a joke.

Sorry for venting...

Can't really blame the NCAA solely on this one. The NBA has the restriction against players going straight out of high school.

The NCAA has a lot of fixing to do. But the NCAA is not the only one to blame here. The NBA is as much, if not more to blame for kids leaving after one year. Either let these kids go straight to the NBA after high school or make them stay for 3 years like the NFL.

I'm a fan of ND and u
UK, but do some research. Many of those one and diners you bring up come back every summer for school, even while earning millions in the league. The team with the second most one and dones? Duke, yet we never hear a mention of them. Maybe you are the one person in society that would turn down your life long dream, and millions of dollars, just to stay in college. Congratulations.

Both ND and UK have great kids on their teams this year. Honestly this is one of the best collections of humans I've even seen on a basketball team. They do it the right way, do tons of stuff on their own you don't know about, yet they get judged. I get this crap from anti ND people all the time, how "we", me being an ND fan too, seem so pics all the time. I am cheering for the Cats for a lot of reasons, mainly because it matters to them more than it does ND. Just look at this board, ND is where they are at in the tourney and the second highest thread on this board is about quarterbacks, with the new recruit thread not far behind. But if ND wins, I will cheer them loudly and hope they win it all!

And the NBA is using the NCAA as its minor league...and no money has to go out of its coffers to fund it. Agreed...it should be 3 years but then the argument will arise about denying a person the right to make a living.

And the way the NCAA sets this up....by rule if you are gonna be a one and done...you must register for 12 credits, that's 4-3 credit classes the fall semester. Get a 'C' average. Spring semester register for 12 more credits...but you don't have to go to class, you can flunk them all! You are still considered a "Student Athlete" in the eyes of the NCAA. What should be done is monies should be withheld from said institutions who win NCAA titles with guys who would not be academically eligible....don't handover these monies until these kids get a degree at some point, make them come back to go to school. You would see this one and done crap tossed out the window...university presidents would want no part of it....

Mirage....did you read my 2nd paragraph? I am not dissing any UK player...I don't know a single soul on that team. I could not tell you the names of 3 players! If they are great kids like you say...terrific....the NCAA is the problem, as is the NBA.

I personally think a kid should be allowed to chase his dream...leave HS and go to the pro's...have at it...but if you decide on the college route the rules change. And NO kid should be allowed to carry 12 credits, flunk all of them, and still be allowed to play.

And for the record I said pretty much the same thing when ND played Duke. And don't get me started on the Univ of No Classes!

SMH. I knew this was coming.

No offense, but that was very much a slam to the Kentucky kids. These kids do ALL the right things and for a outsider who spends zero time following the UK program to chime in a say that these kids don't go to class is ridiculous. On what grounds do you get to make that kind of statement?

I understand that you we're trying to direct this at the NCAA, but the back handed remarks about the players with zero validity have to stop. They do all the right things. They play hard, they play together, they are high character kids, they go to class, and stay out of trouble. Just because they are good enough at their craft to go to the next level and fulfill their dreams, they shouldn't be labeled as bad guys. If Notre Dame was able to bring in elite talent and they played their way into the lottery, many of them would be leaving early as well.

I agree with you about the NCAA though. Some things have to change. Cal has been one of the strongest advocates against the NCAA/NBA about the one and done situation. You don't think he would love to coach these players for multiple years? He's just been the best at working the current system, but he is not for it.

I have always been a big Irish fan. They are the only other school besides UK that I openly root for. That being said I am so sick of hearing how our kids do not go to class. Look up the GPAs before you say this junk. While it is true they would not HAVE to go to class the second semester if they were going to the draft, Cal makes them go. He has said that they owe it to the University and themselves to go to class. Big Kat was seen last week in the cold after a game making an 8:00 class, just like you cite for an Irish player. Check our APR. I remember John Wall had to cut his PC short when announcing he would declare for the NBA because he had a test. Most these guys come back to UK during the summer and take classes while playing some awesome pickup ball in the Craft Center. One guy......ONE left after the season.....Daniel Orton....and where is he now?????

Cal's guys are never arrested, they don't talk smack, they just play. read some of the quotes from the Hampton players after the first round game about UK's players

Plus this year's team is not all Freshman. Hell Poytress will get his degree this year and will have 2 years of eligibility if they choose a medical redshirt for him

Maybe if you weren't so close minded about UK and watched their games you would see this is a polite, articulate, and fun to watch group. No matter what happens from here this has been one of my all time favorite Cats teams

Should be an interesting game tomorrow...good luck

You guys are correct and I apologize....I have no idea if you guys go to class or not...don't know about your teams GPA and don't care to know. I think it's cool if they are good kids, don't get in trouble, do good things in the community, come back to school in the summer...I think all that is great....my problem is that the UK kid COULD sleep in and not go to class. The UK kid COULD fail his 12 credits and keep playing because the NCAA says so....you guys are not breaking any rules....you are doing exactly what the system allows you to do. That is the message I was trying to get across. My problem is with the system, namely the NCAA. Again...one person should not tell another person how to make a living. If a kid out of hs wants to get paid to play and fulfill a dream....he should be allowed to do that. I just believe that if you choose the college route you should have to stay 3 years. Let the NBA draft a number of kids and place them in a minor league like baseball does..pay them...and have clauses in their contracts that takes care of schooling during the kids off season.....and for the rcord I watched you guys play for the first time last nite for 32 minutes. I was left in awe...could not believe how well you guys play together, especially on the defensive end. You appear to have a bunch of kids who play for the whole instead of themselves which is quite remarkable considering you have 6-7 guys who will not be here next fall. They easily could be thinking about just themselves. I kinda wish they were..it may have given ND a better chance.

You can not blame UK or Coach Calipari for one and done players. Other schools do it like UK. And you can not blame the kids for getting a better deal by jumping to the NBA for $$$$$$$$. Hell I would do it any one who says they wouldn't is lying. This is clearly a NBC/NCAA problem if it is a problem at all.

Really? Thats all you can come up with when talking about this game? Lies and name calling. I looked at a lot of post on here and most are very good well thought out post. This however is below ND standards. You have no clue who goes to class or if anything shady is going on. You just run your pie hole. If ND could get the one and dones or two and dones they would most certainly do it. Don't be so stupid to think they wouldn't. You said its no slam on the kids.....well it is a slm......how would you like it if your kid was in that situation and someone called him out saying he don't even go to class. But you know he does. The thing is "YOU DONT KNOW SH*T" So why cant we keep it sane and civil.

You clearly have no knowledge of the APR or how it works

Just get ready to enjoy the game and quite the bickering. It looks like ND fans are getting their excuses all made up beforehand in case ND loses.

Silver....I am not an excuse maker..tomorrow's game is like icing on the cake win or lose...to be in this spot after being below .500 last year...ND should be as loose as a goose...go play, let the chips fall where they may and at the end of the nite celebrate a bit because you either get to play on or you can congratulate one another for making ND history....these kids get to hang a banner and it will be on a rafter somewhere forever....again...I don't like the system. Never have...never will...

If the kids don't finish classes or fail them the schools APR goes down, to many and post season bans see what happened to UConn 2013 i think? So these kids do have to pass and do have to go to class.

They will not play loose as a fan it is easy to say "well this is farther then I thought they would make it everything else is iceing " but the players are so close to a FF that its on their mind for sure.

So you decided yourself that they take 12 credits and flunk...how pathetic. As you said you dont know a single player yet you judge them

This whole issue of one-and-done's is actually starting to get worse.
Now, high-schoolers with NBA aspirations are taking fuller class loads
in an effort to graduate high school in three years rather than four.

Thus allowing them to enter college one year sooner. Thus allowing
them to leave college one year sooner to head for the NBA.

It's all rather ridiculous.

"So you decided yourself that they take 12 credits

Do you have a reading comp problem? I said a UK player COULD take 12 credits, flunk them and be eligible to play as per NCAA rules. See the word COULD written in caps...The same way an Okafor COULD take 12 credits, flunk them and be eligible per NCAA rules. Am I wrong? That is the rule isn't it...

There's my post from 11:52 on this thread...hope that helps you out a bit. I hate the system, have never liked it and never will. Would not like it if ND was doing it...it rapes kids and makes money for the scumbags at the NCAA....last time I checked, this was the USA and we are entitled to an opinion.

Jackson enjoy the moment . It is a David vs. Goliath game tomorrow night . ND is playing with house $$$. They are tough as nails , have great TEAM chemistry and may still lose by 15-20. In my book playing this Kentucky team tomorrow is like the Championship. Who gives a shit if Kentucky players go to class or not. All I know is that ND has ONE ( Grant) . Maybe 2 (Pat C) that would start on every team in America.. Kentucky has 8-9 . The ND players believe they will win tomorrow night and you know what? We are all in different areas of the country believing with this great group when the tip goes off at 8:49. Thats' what matters. Have fun with it my good man.

jr97...thank you. And I was thinking of you when you posted a while back how 27-4 was good therapy for you...How is the therapy as ACC Champs and in the Elite 8...I am happy for you...This is a special group, I will always remember them. I love how they love each other and their coach...as a coach, the relationships with players is the greatest thing ever...

OP, so is Coach K and Duke/Kansas and Self ruining college basketball too?

If Anthony Davis' dream was to play at Notre Dame, you wouldn't let him? Brey wouldn't let an excellent kid like Karl Anthony Towns have a spot on ND's roster?

Give me a break guy. 99% of the ND fans have been pure class on here, don't ruin it for them.

37-0

FOR THE RECORD...I HAVE TONS OF RESPECT FOR YOUR TEAM!..Have you seen the other threads on this site. I think this UK team may be the best team ND has ever played....I HATE THE SYSTEM....Why am I not allowed to have that opinion??? Does the NCAA give a shit about your one and dones if it doesn't work out??? No...but they love the cash, as do the fat ass Univ Presidents who help orchestrate this thing...

I will admit it pisses me off to hear the non stop slam on UK about one and done players not going to class. Everyone wants so badly to show UK or the players are dirty some how. UK brought most of the guys back last year but still nothing changes. We now have more two plus year players and they have one of the most dominate teams in many years.

As long as Cal is at UK he will get the top players. If they stay more than one year it will just end with more talent for the next year....like this one.

ND and most other teams do not get the very top high school players and don't have to worry with all the trash we hear. These same teams will gladly take any of the players UK or Duke gets. Its just that since they don't they can climb on a high horse and act superior.

Cal has said he hates the one and done rule. Whats he to do? Take lesser talent so it looks better to opposing fans? I promise you this. Any team or coach or fan in America would take the exact same players if they could get them.

By the way...there are only about 10 or so one year players that go pro each year....give or take. If everyone wants to complain then do so to the NBA. Not to a team that is successful under the current rules.

I have complained on this thread that the NBA is using the system to its advantage...I have also said in at least 4 responses that UK is playing by the rules it is allowed to play under....but I am told that I am picking on your guys.....I AM NOT....this is a ND website...you guys came over on your own accord and you are welcome to do so....but to accuse me of signaling out your guys is flat out bs....I don't like the one and done rules...period....and for the second time...if ND was doing it I would hate it as well.

Yea bud, I'm sure you'd hate having an Anthony Davis, #1 pick, who would've taken your program to levels it's never reached. Why? Because he was a one and done. The ONLY people that have the elite recruits, are those not getting elite recruits.

You don't see Kansas or duke crying and whining like a baby over it do you? No. They can land them too.

College sports has been a cesspool for 20 years and it happened on the NCAAs watch for the lust of money. Until they pro rate scholarships given to graduation rate, it will continue to be a joke. I think if UK were given 20% of their allowed full rides kids might go to class and Calipari would recruit student athletes.

I agree with Jackson's original post.

Also, there is nothing more annoying than a person that is a supposed ND football fan during the fall then that person turns away from ND basketball in the winter and roots for some other scumbag college basketball program like Kentucky. Frauds if you ask me.

Has Notre Dame EVER had a player leave early for the NFL? Yep, pretty sure you have. Probably in hoops too! It's the same thing people. Just because we have a higher percentage of players able to jump early is not an indictment on Kentucky or Cal. This is an NBA / NCAA issue and will be this way until those two come together and put a plan in place that makes sense. It's all about the $$$ for the NCAA and they are afraid to make any drastic change for fear of losing their cash cow.

Just curious, why is there no criticism of Duke? uNC? Kansas? Indiana? All have had multiple one and done players in the last few years.

"College sports has been a cesspool for 29 years."

Yet it's never had higher ratings, interest, and making more money than it ever has.

I'm sure the media will run with this smart good guys vs. evil kids who don't go to school narrative. Seriously though I think if you guys followed or watched UK for a second you would appreciate how hard they play and how they sacrifice for each other. I think that is the definition of what is good for college basketball. I've always liked Mike Brey and Notre Dame and really respected what they've accomplished over the years. You guys are damn good and it should be very entertaining tomorrow night. Oh and whatever you do going forward, please continue to beat Louisville in heart breaking overtime games.

There you go again..."kids might go to class"....How do you know they dont....Dam the assumptions

It was either last season or this season that UK has the highest APR score in the SEC. Truth hurts. Being 37-0 hurts worse.

Army . Jackson is a class act on this site. U have a great team and do not have to tell us that we would love to have Anthony Davis playing for ND. Of course we would . Jackson' sentiments are actually being discussed by the powers that be and you know that is fact . If a HS player could go to the NBA how many players on Kentucky would be playing tomorrow? Some love it some hate it. That does not take away from the outstanding season Kentucky has had. As a fan for 40 years , the elite 8 does not happen often for ND and I am enjoying every moment. To play Kentucky is like playing the National Championship. Yes tomorrow nite is the ship for me.

ND absolutely deserves this elite 8. I'm very, very impressed with Coach Brey and the Irish. Enjoy it brother!

Typical hater post.., this years UK team are a collection of great kids that not only perform on the court but also in the classroom. Do some research on a lady by the name of Sandy Bell. She's the best in the business at insuring things are done the right way within athletics at UK. Suck it up, your school has little affection for basketball. For example, this Rivals site as of tonight's latest story is about football. Just for that reason you have no reason to cry and point fingers. Don't think you will find the same on one of the Blue Blood school's rivals page atm. Stop crying already, you haven't lost yet!! That said, I look forward to a great game tomorrow!

The things you hypothetically accuse Kentucky "kids" of potentially being able to do also apply to Notre Dame "kids" and has, more than just hypothetically in fact. Don Yaeger's "Under the Tarnished Dome" did more than chronicle a few examples of steroid use and player misconduct. The only thing that you can really say against the best seller was that it smacked of an anti Lou Holtz agenda. Well guess what? There seems to be an anti John Calipari agenda too.

It is a hell of a lot easier to keep up with a dozen basketball players in LEX and numerous members of the media have. e.g. The beginning of the UK 2012-2013 season was the subject of an ESPN documentary. Literally, players were followed dusk to dawn by members of the national media. Believe this: Notre Dame fans had better be damn happy their football program isn't so hounded and hunted. But even if it was probably ND has the political clout to keep a lid on it. We're just a bunch of hicks. We raise corn, make bourbon, race horses and play basketball. Along the way we manage somehow to piss just about every damn body off. That's only livin' in Kentucky.

I've read a few threads on this board and can see you folks just fine. It disappoints me terribly to see what are clearly smart men - genuinely smart - who freely allow themselves to be given over to a notion, or to a perception, or to some vague non-reality that is meant to do nothing other than destroy something that is actually modestly good and virtuous. Any of our players would be Saints wearing your uniform. Wearing ours, all they get to become is their own man. Think about that, and let's have a hell of a ball game tomorrow. Give us a fight, Irish.

Let me see if I understand this thread.

JacksonDomer states

1.That the NCAA is at fault and is a money grubbing machine.
2.That the NBA uses the Colleges as a no cost farm team factory
3.That Kentucky is not breaking any rules.
4. That he would still feel the same if N.D. was in the same position.
5. That he feels Kentucky is a great team.
6. That under the NCAA Rules Kentucky players "COULD" (His emphasis) avoid classes.

Sounds right to me, but Kentucky fans (Some) are mad at him and calling him out.

Now that doesn't sound right to me.
