Will the three new receivers obtained through the portal

Attract a high-quality quarterback from the portal ?
No. From my understanding that is not a position ND is currently pursuing. That of course can certainly change in the spring if they lose someone after spring practice.

We have a top QB in CJ. Need to get him some receivers.
So what you mean to say is 'Yes, we do no need a QB', since you are counting on our youngest QB taking over the starting spot, thus precipitating the transfer very likely of at least Minchey, who certainly can do better than sitting on the bench his entire college career, and possibly even Angeli, who also is good enough to start at a p4 program, but he might not get a big enough offer to outbid ND, and then just stay at ND, even if he longs to start, and just live out the life of an NFL backup in effect.

What evidence do you possess that definitively states CJ Carr will be a top QB in CFB next season?
I would bet on Angeli starting next year, with CJ as the 2. Minchey had all year to surpass Angeli and didn't for whatever reason. Minchey probably transfers out in spring.

All I can go by is Eric and writers on this and other sites who have watched CJ in practice -- all have been unanimous in their praise of CJ. His leadership but mostly, the way he spins it. He seems like the guy. But, and fans are right, all QBs have a learning curve. It would sure be nice if Angeli stuck around to come in when needed. I don't expect that.

Ewers is an NFL level QB -- who has thrown for over 8500 yards and 63 TDs for three years. Ewers becoming Irish would make us (with our elite Offensive Line, RBs and defense) a top three contender for the title next year. Hard not to take a look at him if he is indeed available. Not sure we get through next year's tougher schedule and make the playoffs with an inexperienced QB.

In this case I'll trust the coaches -- I do think the disappointment in 2022 at QB might figure in any decision. We'll see.

Well if that's true then we'll go with CJ, we don't need Quinn Ewers, nor would he come to ND. That would be a disaster. I think it would. He's not even considered a top NFL prospect anymore, more like a later round pick. CJ probably is ready to start and be a good to great starter, and what happens to Minchey and Angeli we don't know. But if we're going to go back to the portal, at least make it for a badass dual threat, and I don't think there's anyone left, unless we're tampering with somebody.

I'm just hoping there's a a robust open competition, and if CJ wins it then so be it.

I tend to agree, I don't believe a guy who played for Texas the last three years is a program fit the way Hartman and Leonard were (coming from basketball colleges.) I think Ewers is the real deal though, and who needs a dual threat QB when you have J Love?!

Fields didn't sign with nd without the staff selling him/them on the 25 qb…. Either we have a stud transfer lined up or the staff sold him/them on a qb currently on the team. I just would be a bit surprised rolling out a qb that’s never really played at Miami opening game. So maybe angeli, whom I don’t think is good enough. D will regresss some next year so we need the offense to be improved.

Do you think Fields is a bigger "get" than Mitchell and Collins were?

All speculation that adds up to nothing.

I do Mike. Collins numbers here are no better than his production at Clemson. Expected more. Mitchell has been a contributor, but not a lead receiver. Fields has the record that suggests he can be our lead receiver next year. Of course, hoping that Faison and others challenge for this.

Beaux Collins the year before ND:

3851013.43
Malachi Fields the year before ND:
5580814.75

I think Fields is a significant upgrade.
Hope so, just don’t think he is that alpha we’re all hoping to have and haven’t since claypool

I know MF said they were not looking for a QB, but it's hard to imagine they weren't peeking.
I agree about Ewers, but besides UT how many teams are QB heavy?

We aren't going to the portal for a QB
A lot of conflicting info there…. Either way, Staff is confident they have or have locked up our starter for 25. No way we get fields without clear confidence in starter and passing offense being sold

Hard to have evidence until they play of course, but at some point in life Marino stepped on the field for the first time and was pretty dang good.

So what do we have? We have his rating, 5 star by 247. He was rated as the 5th best QB in the country. He has good size at 6-3, he graded out as a 5 star in his competitions. He was offered by almost all SEC and B10 schools including GA, Bama, Michigan, PSU, Miami and LSU. He finished 5th at the elite 11 and he tied for first in pure passing.

I don't know what more we really can say about the kid, in the BG game as a Frosh he looked pretty damn good.

If your not going to play someone with this pedigree, you should probably move on and just go portal every year. He by far is the most talented QB we have and have had for some time if you go by the services.

Star ratings, size, offers, the Spring game.

Thanks.

We're going to have an open competition among the returning QBs. You know what's worse than going to the portal every year? Preordaining a starting QB based on his HS credentials.

Agreed. CJ (and Steve and Kenny) have done all the right things.

My hope is that CJ is Trevor Lawrence who as a true freshman led Clemson to an undefeated season and a shellacking of both ND and Bama (a lot worse than the beating we took) and a Natty. Of course TR was one of the most decorated HS QBs of all time.

But all of this 'chatter' about bringing in another seasoned QB (however unfounded) makes me wonder -- given that we've brought in a portal QB 3 of the last 4 years, and given that that the position is the most difficult to master without significant experience -- are the days of recruiting QBs over? Five of the Eight QBs starting in the quarterfinals are transfers. If ND goes to the portal again this year, I fear maybe recruiting QBs is over. Why would you pick a school that brought in a portal QB when they had three guys who have been waiting and doing all of the right things? A team that would have gone to the portal 4 of the last 5 years.

For my money, I hope we stick with CJ and whoever of Steve and Kenny stays.

I don’t really have an issue if some absolute crazy good portal QB shows up, we want the best and to win every year.

It just would not surprise me based on his ranking and what we saw in the BG game that he can be an amazing QB.

That’s kind of how it works. It’s why Michigan paid 20m for a HS QB, his credentials. Same with Deuce.

Just like KVA, Knapp and the other frosh that are playing. They were all top players in HE, there credentials got them to ND and lo and behold those actually played out.

So you weren't kidding. Okay. And Knapp was a nobody, he was like one of the lowest rated players in the class. And I don't think Mich paid old boy 20 mil, are you drunk? This sounds like a drunk post. Anyway, I'm pulling for Minchey, but I do think Carr is pretty impressive, and may be more advanced, if not more talented .

10.5m reported. Knapp was a high 3 star. Similar to our Frosh CB. Might have heard of him. Every post you have sounds like a drunk post. But I really just believe you either are Brian Kelly or his Mom.

You're still drunk. And you shouldn't bash BK. It's not cool, man.
