Just read this:

Jaylon Smith did not make the cut to five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award, emblematic of the nation’s top defensive player.

The five who did are Temple linebacker Tyler Matakevich, Duke safety Jeremy Cash, Clemson defensive end Shaq Lawson, Penn State defensive end Carl Nassib and Alabama linebacker Reggie Ragland.

Have to admit I haven't seen all of these guys play, but are they all that good?! Because JS has had one dominating football season for the Irish. Maybe he needs to come back for a senior year (see Manti, see Floyd) to prove how wrong they were! Or have two ints and several sacks in an upset victory this weekend.

Only two of those candidates are linebackers. So going off of this list, he could be the third best linebacker and the sixth best defender. Not bad.

I happen to think he's a great athlete playing linebacker rather than actually a great linebacker for what its worth. Imagine how non-ND fans feel.

so what ? awards are subjective. jaylon doing just fine. the nfl draft is the true reward. no joe schmidt ?

While JS is really really good.... I wonder how his stats compare? I know stats, especially on defense can be pointless but I don't remember him getting any picks, and only a few sacks/FF/FR. Seemed like Manti had a bunch of picks his senior year.

different positions and responsibilities not to mention schemes.

Yes, but you are missing my point. JS has what, one sack this year? No picks, I can't remember any forced fumbles and only one recovery. While he is a stud, and does his job (and more), you need eye popping stats to get awards. I think Te'o had 7 picks in 2012....

Well life is not fair.

That said, Jaylon has not stood out with the things that get attention like sacks and ints, etc probably the way ND uses him Great player but not a lot of visible sizzle Manti's last year he had ridiculaous stats and takeaways

agreed. that said jaylon will surely be a higher pick and a much more successful pro than teo. significantly more talent.

the defensive scheme is not the optimum fit for Jaylon and as a group he is the lone standout LB among average or lesser skilled mates. Awards, are never won individually, players need help from teammates.

I actually believe that Jaylon would really benefit from coming back for his senior season.

That's what happens when he's forced to play Linebacker like he's a safety. Seems he spends more time dropping in coverage then he does rushing the QB off the edge. And before anybody says it, I know he's inside and his job's not to rush the QB.

Seems to me that is a silly reason to make a life decision; to prove some strangers wrong. With his options, what these people think of him is not likely high on his pro-con lists.

i don't see how his stock would get much higher. given the rookie salary scale it doesn't make sense to come back unless he really wants to be at nd 4 years.
