what were your thoughts on the press conference?

I think Kelly seems to be coming into his own as HC at ND. He seemed ultimately confident and seems to really get how lucky he is to be in the position he is in. Although I'm sure he's losing a ton of hair in the process.

I don't think he realized how great it is to have the quality of players, administration, etc which comes with the job. I like his comment that with the resources Jack and the school provide him, it's easy for him to find the quality coaches he has been able to bring on.

Some are predicting him in other threads to leave in 2 years. I think if he lasts 3 more years we should count ourselves as lucky. 8 years in his job puts a lot of years on a guy. God bless him and he would be leaving the team in vastly better position than it was when he arrived.

I just hope Jack is still at ND to hire his replacement. I think that hire will define Jack's legacy.

Did you see the defense line new coach just play with his toy front of ND player?

Sooooo negative.

Na..he came into his own in year 3 when he took ND to its first National Championship in a quarter century. I'm not saying he is Saban or Meyer but the guy is a Top 10-15 college football coach under any circumstances and I wouldn't take too many more than, especially when you consider just not W's and the other areas a ND coach needs to excel in. How about you offer a cognitive response to a post instead of attacking any pro ND post..NARP.

Kelly has taken the program to new heights and expectations, the previous 3 coaches were unable to achieve or sustain.
If Kelly is out in 2-3 years, with no improvement in the win loss %, he will be remembered as a mediocre coach for Notre Dame.
His status as a "great" coach will rely on the wins and losses. I keep thinking he will be remembered as a great coach, but I believe that is still to be determined.

Agreed 2012 was a magic season.

I'm talking about Kelly's demeanor in the press conference. He just seemed very comfortable in his own skin. His answers to questions were clear and confident. He just seems to own the job now.

I don't think I've ever enjoyed a press conference like this, certainly not with the last 3 coaches. It was a feeling like reading Lou's quotes in the Sunday morning papers so many years ago.

As for his status as a great coach? He needs to win a NC. And beat USC.

Go Irish!

Agreed. He is the guy. Who do we get?

But he's got to do a better job supervising players... We lose our QB two years ago -- when Ev was kicked out, and then we lose three big impact players and two defensive backups in a year where we were thin. That hurt. There has to be a way, administratively, to keep tighter control on these kids and keep them on the field. Maybe that is what the Powlus hire is about.

It was like most press conferences of this nature.

imo The addition of ND Alumni to the staff will help in a big way.

Their transition should be as seamless as it gets.

I wonder why kelly is embracing the concept of having someone turn things upside down?

Actually, I don't, but I am glad he is recognizing that need.

"We agreed at the end that what we were looking for was somebody that
could turn the room upside down. We didn't want somebody to be
equal. We wanted somebody that was going to turn that room upside down,
that was that good. We weren't going to settle for somebody that was on the
same plane. We wanted somebody that was going to challenge us on a day‑to‑day
basis...... As we got a chance to really think about it, we've been at it
a long time, you know, the both of us, and I think we came to the agreement
that we're going to get somebody in here that it's going to keep us on our
toes, is going to bring that room up to a level that is going to create such
synergy and energy on a day‑to‑day basis...."

This team still lacks discipline and consistency among other things.

The Music City Bowl win was good, but that game started with a ST fumble which was followed by a first play timeout....

That's a microcosm of an ongoing kelly theme.... (Also, LSU was ranked # 23 and fell out of the top 25)

We need to build off it big time.

There are a lot of excellent pieces in place to make a run.

All many of us are asking for is fundamentally sound, disciplined, consistent, hard nosed football.....

If the staff can deliver that we can make hay....

PS The other night Arizona was playing Utah State in a tight hoop game. One and done player Stanley Johnson 4 time CA state champion screwed up in the closing minutes. Guess what the coach did? He benched him immediately and he never saw the floor again. kelly would do well to use the bench as an effective learning tool. He let Golson get away with murder while benching an incredible talent (Zaire). 2014 will be remembered by me as the "what if Zaire came in earlier year"....
