Walk On ,in the case of 6'1" 275 LB Colin Grunhard whose father Tim was an outstanding offensive lineman ?

First of all they do not have to try out for the football team...already on it and on the scout team. It also likely grants them admission to the University under the same academic rules as Scholarship athletes. The only difference is they still have to pay!

When I was there all walk-ons in good standing dressed for home games and could use all of the varsity facilities (weight rooms, trainers, etc). They just couldn't travel unless they made the travelling roster.

When a coach says that they want to offer you a preferred walk on spot, they are saying that they will eventually have a spot for you on the roster when school gets underway in the fall. You have been given the green light to at least be on the team during the first year and be a part of practice.

A walk on is in a much tougher situation. Colleges even at the Division I level in football have tryouts to see if you can make the team. If you are a walk on, you will be going to those tryouts to see if you are good enough to practice with the big boys throughout the entire year. You basically have a tryout to be able to be a preferred walk on.

This is from the Recruitng-101 site

Colin Grunard has to pay 50,000 dollars as a freshman , in hopes of getting scholarship offer as a sophomore,or junior ..

At an unnamed "THE" university, walk ons are chosen for their GPA first, then their talent. I knew a talented kid who was not even allowed to try-out at "The" university because his GPA was too low. At "The" university, walk ons are more than just scout team fodder. They help pad the team GPA.

At ND, walk ons appear to be chosen for many reasons other than GPA. It could be a legacy kid who has potential, or it could be the undersized speedy guy with a huge heart that is an ideal gunner on special teams. Or, it could be the son of a big name donor who adds to the team chemistry. Who knows? But nothing I like better than reading about a walk-on who earns a scholarship. I know we need 4-5 star talent, but I hope there is always a spot saved for a walk on who earns it.

As long as the legacy does not have the last name James and doesn't have a father at BSPN name Craig.

Don't kid yourself, a preferred walk on will NOT pay 50K. They've been offered a spot on the team and the powers that be will find them financial assistance. Maybe not all 50K, but significant.

In fact, unless you're insanely wealthy, NO ONE pays 50K. There is a lot of financial aid available out there.
