Good morning Ski,
I get Peacock and watched a terrible telecast, which was made decidedly worse by streaming problems by my cable network. The offense obviously hummed right along with over 500 yards and 40 plus points, no sacks, no turnovers, etc…. Numbers would have been even more impressive if not for two critical holding calls.
The defense was like a tale of two cities between the first and second half’s. We held them to three points in the second half, got more pressure on their QB, forced three…. three and outs to end the game; and most importantly, we had far fewer missed tackles in the second half. In addition to really poor tackling, we had two stupid roughing the passer penalties and a PI that kept drives alive for Central Michigan. We missed Brown and Bertrand more than I expected.
A partial Yes to your OP; we get killed against Ohio St if the defense that showed up in the first half hits the field on Saturday, and I think we get narrowly beat if the defense that showed up in the second half hits the field Saturday. I don’t expect either. Bertrand and Brown should be back, Harper available again after missing chunks of the second half, and Ohio St will have our undivided attention all week long; and you have to believe that tackling and penalties will be a coaching focus all week as well. I wish like hell that Gabriel was available as we do miss his presence in the middle on defense.
So no, I haven’t lost confidence in our defense; but I also haven’t Seen us as a top ten dominant defense all year. We’re more like a top 25 bend don’t break defense that can rise to the occasion to compliment a top ten offense to beat the likes of an Ohio St. I think we enter this game as the clear underdog, and I can’t wait to see us put together a complete game on both sides of the ball and quiet all the damn naysayers. Go Irish!
