I don't understand his deal. But I do now understand why he's bounced around to so many jobs as he just doesn't get it.

*I never understood why they keep pumping up Schmidt as the guy who is the MVP of the defense. Watching the games I don't see him making any calls or checks before the snap like claimed and I certainly don't see him making many plays. It seems every play made by a linebacker is made by Jaylon Smith. Of course when Sheldon Day and Jaron Jones went down last year it wasn't their impact that hurt our defense but rather it was Schmidt being out that made us look lost is the spin I keep reading?????
*Bottom line we need more play makers at the linebacker position to give this defense more teeth and Schmidt and Onwualu are average to below average linebackers at this level. Grace and Morgan are better talents and deserve a chance to be on the field if nothing more to see if they give us more production than these two.

*Enough of the different looks already and just give the offense a look that they can't stop! Sheldon Day dropping back in coverage??? Only three linemen rushing??? The first couple series we had at least 7-8 people in the box and went aggressively after the QB or running back and UVA really struggled moving the ball at all. Of course Van Gorder always wants to show how complicated his defense is so he then rolled out all these different looks with a mild pass rush as Shedlon Day started dropping back and they started to move the ball and got back in the game. In general we hardly rushed all four defensive linemen the rest of the game and then when we did blitz it looked like the d-backs weren't prepared to match-up one on one at the snap.
*Our d-backs can cover but I just don't know why they struggled so bad and looked so lost yesterday. Cole Luke is a talent and looked lost too often yesterday like there was confusion on who he was supposed to cover. Finally two years later I'm still waiting for Max Redfield to have a break out game. Never seems to be an impact against the passing game or the running game.

*Last year Van Gorder had the team completely ill-prepared to play against Navy's triple option. This year we are playing an even better version of it in Georgia Tech who has better athletes and in my opinion better coaching of it too. Could be another long and frustrating game to watch on Saturday. I just hope we can outscore them as they will put up at least 28 against us with Van Gorder preparing us for it.

Go Irish regardless!
