Exton (Pa.) Downington East tight end Cary Angeline made his second unofficial visit of the spring to Notre Dame this past weekend.
Angeline –– who is Notre Dame's top target at the position –– was accompanied by his mother and sister on the visit. While the 6-7, 234-pound tight end wasn't available for an interview on Sunday, Blue & Gold Illustrated was able to catch up with someone inside his camp to get the nuts and bolts from the visit.
–– By all accounts Saturday's visit went good (when don't they?) but it should be noted that Cary's mother was impressed by what Notre Dame had to offer outside of football. As we mentioned last week, mom's approval is important with this recruitment, and it looks like the Irish took a step in the right direction after she met with the academic and support staff.
–– Angeline had a chance to sit down with head coach Brian Kelly and tight ends Scott Booker on Saturday. The Irish haven't put the pressure on Angeline to make a decision, but they have expressed numerous that he's a priority for the coaching staff moving forward. The relationship with Booker will be key for the Irish and the assistant will likely see Angeline at his school in the coming weeks.
–– While Angeline hasn't publicly trimmed his list of schools, he has began to start neglecting calls and direct messages from certain schools. So, what does that mean? Well, follow the visits. Angeline holds offers from Alabama, Penn State, Auburn, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, USC, Ohio State and others, but Notre Dame is the first school out of the bunch to get a return visit this spring. While it's not clear which schools Angeline isn't responding to anymore, it's a good sign that the Irish have an open line of communication at this stage in his recruitment.
–– According to the contact close to Angeline, there is no set decision date –– and there won't be one for a while –– but it looks like Angeline would like to make one in the summer months. Angeline will be a captain this season at Downignton East and the Cougars are eyeing a state title run with the elite tight end and Maryland tackle commit Michael Clark in the fold. Ending his recruitment in June or July would allow for him to focus on the team.
-- Angeline won't play AAU basketball this spring or summer because of the college interest he's receiving in football, which means he'll have time to visit schools, but he has not set dates for any other trips right now. With that being said, the Irish Invasion in June remains a possibility.
Bottom line? Notre Dame has not only made an impression on Angeline, but also his family. The Irish are in good shape for one of the nation's top tight ends with the spring evaluation period underway and a likely summer decision looming.
