here is just a sample:

Clemson:
Dexter Lawrence--6'4" 340, 5 star
Nyles Pinckney--6'3" 298, 4 star
Rashan Gary--6'5" 290, 5 star (#1 recruit in the nation visiting Clemson this weekend)
Plus they have two 5 star LB commits

FSU: Cedric Wood--6'3" 285, 4 star
Aime Walvenski--6'5" 290, 3 star

Alabama: Raekwon Davis--6'7" 310, 4 star
Quinnen Williams--6'4" 265, 4 star

Florida: Shavar Manuel--6'3" 310, 4 star

LSU: Edwin Alexander--6'3" 328, 4 star
Rashard Lawrence--6'2" 298, 4 star

Of course, many of the top schools will be converting some of their BIG O-linemen to DT's as well. The top coaches are focusing on the defense in general and the defensive front.

Every good coach seems to know that "D" starts from the controlling & getting push up the middle.

If you aren't elite on the front 3 or 4 then you better be elite in the back 7 or 8.

Unfortunately right now we are neither.

I agree this is concerning as well. Only way to make up for lack of DTs in this class is that one of the Taylor, Dew-Treadway, and Tiassum blossom like a 5 star to pair with Tillery and in next year's class ND gets 2-3 highly ranked DT recruits.

On a side note, even though it may be difficult in terms of satisfying academic requirements, I wish ND would recruit JUCO kids when striking out at a position or two.

We'll gladly take any juco kid who can qualify. That eliminates 99.9% of them.

With that thread title, why didn't you mention any "top schools"? Regardless of that blunder, which schools are trying to load up on tiny DTs?

our irish have a chance to load up with a very sick d-line with the 2017 class as they already have a verbal from 5 star GA DE Robert Beal and insiders say top five overall rated DT Haskell Garrett 6-2 280 of NV will be on commit watch when he comes for the second junior day in the spring as he has our irish at the top and plus our irish also have a great shot 5 star FL DE Josh Kaindoh who is really high on our irish and he will be teammates Robert Beal next year the IMG Academy in FL as Beal is transferring there and will help recruit him for our irish

it's almost always the other way around. it's extremely rare for an o -lineman to switch sides.

thank you mr. obvious. nd's problem has always been that the majority of the top d linemen year in and year out simply don't qualify. it's been an ongoing problem for years.

echo............

Good point. It all depends on needs. And often times that depends on injuries. The big uglies in the trenches understand what needs to be done in order to achieve execution. Some are versatile and can make a switch while others............not so much. A lineman that can play any position on the o-line and then switch and play on the D-line is a precious gem. They are few and far between but they do exist.

(Historical note: The greatest athlete of all time, Jim Thorpe at one time or another played every single position on the football team including offense and defense. In his day everybody played both ways.)

Hummmm, OK...........well, I'm sure you are very knowledgeable about top teams. Perhaps you don't consider the two National Championship contenders and previous National Championship winners "top teams"???

Suggestion:

For starters watch the following schools and see what they do:

Alabama
LSU
Ole Miss
Florida State
Clemson
North Carolina
Ohio State
Michigan
Oregon
Stanford
Arizona State
TCU
Baylor

Of course, if you feel there are other schools that should be considered "top schools" by all means, please add them to this brief list. ;)
