Tommy Kraemer will take his official visit to Notre Dame next weekend.
Notre Dame offensive tackle commit Tommy Kraemer has had an eventful few days.
Just one day after hosting Irish offensive line coach Harry Hiestand for an in-home visit, he was named the Gatorade Ohio Football Player of the Year.
It was an honor that Kraemer says will be memorable for both him and his family.
"It's very special," Kraemer told Cincinnati.com. "I've put in a lot of work the past four years and it's pretty exciting that it's all paying off."
Kraemer pieced together a senior season that saw him anchor a Cincinnati Elder offense that averaged 390.3 yards a game and made it to the Division 1 regional semifinals. He also set a single-game school record with 23 pancake blocks against Cincinnati La Salle.
While the numbers were impressive for a lineman, the nation's No. 3 ranked offensive tackle claims that his focus has already shifted towards his future in South Bend, and that's what made Hiestand's visit just as important to him as the award he received Thursday.
"It was great," Kramer said when asked about the time with his future position coach.
"It's always good having Coach Hiestand in town and just having a chance to talk with him."
"He's just really excited to get me up there. I'm working really hard right now just so I'm ready to go when I get up there in the summer. We talked for a really long time. We talked about my season, how they are doing up there, and just kind of about life. It was really good."
Kraemer, who was the first commit in the class for the Irish, will take his official visit to Notre Dame next weekend for the team's football awards show. He said that Hiestand told him during the in-home visit, that offensive tackle junior tackle Mike McGlinchey will be his host for the official, and that has him excited.
"It should be fun hanging around him again," Kramer said. "I know a lot of the other commits are going to be up there like Liam Eichenberg and we're all in a group chat kind of just talking about it. I'm looking forward to getting to know those guys a little bit better."
Kraemer's prep career might be in the books, but he's set to take the field one more time for the Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 9.
"I'm just looking to soak in the whole experience," Kraemer said. "I have heard it's neat, but obviously the competition is something that I'm looking forward to. I'm just looking to leave my mark and to get better there. It's going to be a fun week."
The 6-5, 310-pound Kramer is ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 34 overall prospect in the country and the No. 1 recruit in Ohio. He was named to the The Associated Press 2015 All-Ohio Division I first team offense.
