They won't fire Kelly. They will put assistants in charge of play calling etc. They will strip him of his duties. He will be a glorified figure head. They have already brought in many former ND players so that is a signal they want ND guys on the inside. Administration will hire the new DC and either promote Sanford or get someone with a track record of success. They're not gonna do the Weis BS again with the money. Just pure logic.

You don't know what you're talking about dude.

The Administration will treat this as a bump in the road because of his first six years here at ND. Beyond that I haven't a clue but I don't expect them to replace him anytime soon. ND put itself in a tough spot again after giving him the extension. Besides ND will not scrap the Hesburgh changes for winning football games. ND wants to be known for it's academics and not football anymore. We might as well join the ACC and forget our glorious past. ND Football is just a shell of it's glorious past. ND Football hasn't really been fun for me since Coach Parseghian retired in 1974. Coach Holtz did have that incredible five year run, but 30 loses in 11 seasons can't be ignored. Now Kelly has 27 loses in less than 7 years and no big run coming after all.

Ready to become a Alabama fan 64?

No college AD, pro GM or owner tells an HC what his staff is to do. (Unless you are Jerry Jones and look at that dumpster fire of a franchise )

They have to in this situation. Kelly has become incompetent for whatever reason. If they don't take decision making any from him or fire him immediately it will cause long term damage to the program.

they will not blame assts for Kelly's behavior; that would be same as Kelly blaming Mustipher!

And in reply to the notion that Meyer or Saban do worse; we all know two persons can do or say the sane thing/act and the way it is recieved or percieved is different. Kelly is not a Meyer nor a Saban.
And with Kelly it has been week after weak!

Ara, I completely agree. What needs to happen on the fans side is this. Stop going to games and stop buying merchandise. The people in charge put out this lie that they want to compete for championships and fans buy into it. They don't care. If they did they would be in it most years. They spent 4 million dollars on Crossroads. It's now up to the money people to simply not go and stop giving. Maybe they'll get the message. You know it is possible to be very good and known for football and be very good academically. Somehow those running the school can't see that. But let's not forget, it's football. It is at its core a " gladiator " sport. So you need certain players to win. Until that happens, if at all , they will be a mediocre program. But when the seats are empty and donors stop giving , maybe things will change. I'm not holding my breath.

I'm embarrassed with my school. This administration is doing all they can to prove the myth that you can't win with Student-Athelete, and that pisses me off. All this crap about excellence, accountability, responsibility and "play like a champion" is proven to be complete BS. ND has completely abandon all those principles and shown it is interested in one thing and one thing only, and that's $$$$$$$. This team will never compete for National Titles again until it accepts the fact that Football put ND on the map. Turn the focus from $$$$ to winning.

Start by canceling the NBC contract, its done nothing to promote winning
Fire the entire coaching staff and bring in a proven winner, at whatever cost
"Say it isn't so", but join the ACC as a full member. So the kids have something to play for

Absolutely right! The guy who wrote this post has no idea of how this business works. Wouldn't surprise me that coaching hierarchy and authority boundaries are spelled out in his contract. They usually are. Any good agent has that in the contract as well as who and how the HC is replaced. Post is nonsense.

If the hierarchy does not like what the assistants are doing clean house. HC included. Sweep out all the dead wood.
Hiring good assistants is just as important as recruiting good players.

And here is the crazy thing. New HC comes in, not unusual to retain a few assistants. Happens quite a bit (but not all the time elsewhere ) college and pros.

I was around for the Ara years and they were terrific, but you can't take anything away from Lou who faced tougher schedules, tighter scholarship limitations and in his final years a less than cooperative administration.

Get the impression the administration and Swarbrick want to have winning seasons , like 10-20 rankings but do not necessarily care if Irish reach the level of an Ohio State ,Alabama, Michigan , Clemson etc and perhaps, maybe ,once in a while break the top 10 .

I also feel a little bit down that teams like Washington , Washington State , Indiana , Wisconsin , Colorado , Utah ,etc with lower recruiting rankings are performing at a better level than ND . ND is a complete reversal of last year's team and wonder if the coaching staff has any idea to at least win some games

As far as Kelly's contract , I hope the administration and Swarbrick didn't give Kelly the same type of contract as Weis. There should be some kind of buyout

They could put pressure on him. Do what we say or your gone. Just like any other business. Kelly could always resign if he can't stand the heat. Kelly has a personality that is inflexible. Decisions have to be made for him... if he doesnt like this then pack your bags. Must avoid CW part 2.

This is a silly comment. It's not done that way, not at ND and at most D1 situations. It's spelled out in the contract the HC runs the team the way he feels best. Period. No pressure, no ultimatums by the administration. There usually will be a meeting and a mutual understanding of the direction of the program and expectations. Then they move forward, if both sides decide to. My suspicion is, at some point everyone will sit down and assess the state of the program and more importantly the ability to actually change the direction. That's the important point, can the HC change the direction given how far along the process is. That's why I've always felt that next year both sides will meet after the season and mutually agree it is in the best interests of both to move in a different direction. Could happen this year if we lose 7 or more games..

Why do we have to lose a certain amount of games to reach this conclusion? How many years has there been incompetence in the red zone? It's a philosophical thing. Paul Finebaum relates Kelly's situation to the Titanic. This is a historical pattern that a big win or string of wins won't change.

I agree with you Ara on everything except Lou was a great coach. Even his 1st year at 5-6 you could see the progress . I had great fun watching his teams play except the 6-5-1 team. After his tenure it has been a few good wins . BK is still the coach because of the 12-0 season kind of stabilized him . This season has show to be an abomination with some excellent talent. He is a coach full of excuses, has no clue how to run the football and cannot evaluate talent very well . Ara P would have had this team at 6-0.
