So if you follow recruiting closely you get to profile each kid as a recruit. Some times you can get a picture of their personality and can kind of project how they will pan out on the team (or at least try). So if you went back in time and told yourself these particular guys would eventually become captains of the team during their careers how do you think you would have reacted? For me...

Kurt Hinish- I pictured him as a necessary glue guy, would of been moderately surprised probably because he would have to be a starter. I didn’t picture Darnel Ewell not panning out the way he did.

MTA-Another one where I would be pleasantly surprised, late grab that I definitely liked at the time. But stereotyping our Poly guys, they always seem to pan out and become leaders so I wouldn’t have been totally shocked.

Drew White- I would not of believed it at the time. I probably envisioned more as depth, or someone that would have been passed up by younger guys immediately.

Avery Davis- I would have to assume it would be at quarterback at the time, and I would probably be excited. I thought his ceiling was Greg Ward from Houston at the time.

Jarrett Patterson-Probably wouldn’t have been shocked, OL tradition and all. Definitely liked the late pickup and liked him the most by far for what was an underwhelming 2018 class.

Kyren Williams-A little surprised, probably more so because RB as captains seem a little rare. But ND always seems to produce a running game so I wouldn’t have been totally shocked.

Kyle Hamilton- Easiest kid to predict panning out and being a team leader since Jaylon Smith.

Next Question is are there guys that you think would have had more of a “captain” type career that didn’t? Kind of based on how they were as recruits and interviews, and are there current guys that you think are shoe ins down the line?

If someone would have asked me who would eventually become a captain in a current class I would always go QB. So at the time Phil Jurkovic would have been an easy choice for me. Another one would have been Derrik Allen, I just remember interviews involving his dad and the kid seemed to have it all together. Obviously it didn’t pan out for either but I would have definitely been a little surprised by that.

As for current guys or even current recruits. Blake Fisher comes to mind local kid and he was the biggest recruiter for the class. Same goes for Spindler. Both seem like easy choices. Kollie, every interview that kid was all business and just about ball he just screamed eventual captain to me. I’d love to pick a sleeper like Drew White, maybe Joe Alt but it’s hard to predict on kids that most likely going to be on a 5 year plan. That’s a long way to go.
