I think it would be a fair comparison to say that Mack Brown (158-48 16 yrs Texas) and Lou Holtz (100-30-2 11 yrs ND), had very similar college football head coaching careers. Both Mack Brown and Lou Holtz made their reputations on coaching downtrodden college football programs and turning them into competitive winning programs during their tenure. Also, Both head coaches reached the pinnacle of their head coaching carrers in re-building two traditional college football programs into National Champions before their eventual dismissal from Notre Dame and The University of Texas.
Eventually, both Mack Brown and Lou Holtz were replaced by what were considered to be two hot commodities in defensive coordinator Bob Davie at Notre Dame and Louisville Head Coach Charlie Strong at Texas. After mediocre results, both head coaches were relieved of there duties in favor of two more hot commodity head coaches in ND Tyrone Willingham and Texas Tom Hermann. Then as both programs continued to be less than stellar, in walks Urban Meyer only to walk away from it's glowing bride-to-be head coaching job.
