we are adding 2 graduate wrs transfers , Right now we have St. Brown ,Stepherson , Boykin, Sanders , Claypool .,Finke and others also listed as wrs. Mack at tight end . Cameron Smith , a speedy wide receiver from Arizona State is being added to ND, plus another WR, plus a defensive back transferring from Navy . Are these players better than our recruits or are they insurance against injuries ?

Gilman, the Navy transfer would be a great addition and would definitely compete to start at CB. I've read he is going to visit, but nothing definitive about him coming to ND.
The ASU transfer, Smith is a legitimate speedy receiver with a very good resume who injured his knee and lost all of 15 and I think may have played sparingly in 16. He is supposedly totally recovered. If healthy and 100% back to form, he will play and contribute.
The other WR, Canteen I think is the name, was a puzzling transfer to me. He was a high potential guy with a lot of speed who fought injuries his entire career at Michigan I believe, and who never really contributed.

How about a big, fast DL line transfer?!!! We're good at WR, I don't get this. And, I really didn't like losing TH at center and guard -- that could hurt..

I never realized players could transfer from Navy. Does the transfer relieve him of his commitment to Naval service after graduation?

Once you signed on the dotted line, I thought Uncle Sam owned you.

I think that applies after two years. Gilman is transferring after one. Not sure how the transfer rules requiring a player to sit a year applies to an Academy transfer. As I understand it, non scholarship players can transfer without sitting, so the question is whether a Navy player is considered on an athletic scholarship, since all Academy students are there at taxpayer expense. Would be awesome if Gilman is eligible to play right away and chooses ND.

Probably has something to do with DL being the weakest academic position in college football. To be a graduate transfer you have to GRADUATE in four years, or less. There are probably 25 JUCO DLs for every DL graduate transfer, for the same reasons.

IMO, Stepherson is likely gone or at least going to be ineligible this season. I think that's where the Cam Smith transfer comes in. If the staff is confident the knee is fully healed and he can get back to being the explosive sophomore that played for ND's offensive staff at ASU, he could provide the speedy verticall threat that ND would be losing if Stepherson is indeed put for 2017.

As for Gilman, Utah is another school high on his list, but ND really wants this kid. He was excellent as a freshman safety for the Midshipmen and would be a nice fit at the stud (SS) position for ND and would serve as the 2nd safety in the class, along with Derrik Allen. Gilman would have 3 years left and would be an excellent pickup.

What are you hearing about Stephenson? I know they pushed his hearing. Did that happen?

Well if Steperson is not playing this year , I can see where a couple of transfers could help immediately with only St. Brown ,Sanders , Finke ,Boykin at the wideouts .there are some other wide receivers on the roster ,but I guess they 're low on depth chart .

That's correct regarding the 2 year mark. Midshipmen have the option to sign their commitment papers entering Junior year (2 for 7). Once they sign, they have a commitment to finish the 2 remaining years at USNA plus 5 years as an officer.
You bring up a good point about the scholarship. I know from past players transferring, they had to sit a year due to NCAA transfer rules (e.g., Hunter Reddick)

I believe he has to sit out a year if he comes.

We are already below 85 and will probably lose 10 or 15 more players before the season starts. We should accept all the transfers who want to come in accept Jucos and over recruit and we just might play with 85 scholarship players like most teams.
