Blue & Gold Illustrated has been able to confirm that freshman defensive end Jhonny Williams has asked for and been granted his release from the University of Notre Dame. Williams intends to transfer to another school.
Williams made the news known himself, posting a message on Facebook.
"Friends, family, loved ones, I will be transferring from the university of Notre Dame to pursue a football/academic career elsewhere, thank you for your support," posted Williams.
Williams signed with Notre Dame in February of 2014 out of Berrien Springs High School in Benton Harbor, Michigan. He came to Notre Dame with great promise and earned high marks from the staff last season for his athleticism and natural pass rushing skills. Williams was behind from a development standpoint and did not play as a freshman. It was hoped that he could eventually emerge as an edge rusher for the Irish.
He will have to sit out the 2015 season and will have three years of eligibility remaining.
With his transfer, Notre Dame is one step closer to being at the 85 scholarship limit.
