Will Kelly coached teams ever learn to cover the Stanford tight ends? They beat us every year with their tight ends, including tonight.

Hahahhaha hard no. To stop Stanford's tight ends in the seems while playing cover 1, which you must if you want to contend with their run game, you need playmaking safeties, which ND hasn't had since Harison Smith graduated. Kelly and his staff have methodically failed at recruiting that position since his arrival in South Bend and Stanford knows it and exploits it every year.

You want to cover really good tight ends. Do everthing in your power (legal or not) to hold onto Derrik Allen and stop him from going to be a star at Georgia and sell your soul to land Houston Griffith and pull him away from Florida State. Get them in an elite weight training program, don't burden them with anything close to approaching a tough class schedule in season and let them focus on only football for 4 months each year. Line them up beside each other, stay out of Mike Elko's way and let him coach them and watch them eat Stanford's tight ends alive...

Oh wait. I just realized we're Notre Dame fans.

Alright, sticking with "no".

Still laughing at the "no" comment as well. Stinks that we lost Gervin to Sparty. I really like this kid's ability. And another well thought out and insightful post by IO. Easily the best and most knowledgeable poster on the board. On a side note, I was at the game when Holtz grabbed Huntley Bakich by the face mask coming off the field and Monk's minions went crazy at Lou. In my opinion, the beginning of the end for this great coach. It's almost like Malloy injected Holtz with sedatives after that game. Years later Bakich said he appreciated what Holtz was trying to instill in him by grabbing him by the face mask. Sadly, Monk still had no clue.

It's because Suits don't have any business tinkering in football. They have no clue what they are talking about. They are administrators, not leaders of men that go to war. Suits ought to stick to making money, shaking hands a kissing babies. Their arrogance causes overreach into fields they have no clue about and ruins great men who do their jobs brilliantly. Holtz is a perfect example of that.

As fantastic as Saban is as a coach, One of the keys to his success at Alabama is that everyone stays the hell out of the way. He asks for something. He gets it. He needs money for something. They fund it. He has complete autonomy and his players aren't subject to multiple levels of scrutiny and oversight... The Suits let the man who coaches football, coach, and Saban let' the people who make money, make money. When people become so arrogant as to think they are omnipotent to know what's best in a field they have no experience in, you get Notre Dame.

Your last paragraph is everything that's wrong with college football. I hope we never get like Alabama if this truly is what it takes to win. Watching Alabama get taken apart and fall apart yesterday at least showed there is some justice.

They lost to a program ran the same exact way. If you like that Notre Dame does things differently. Awesome. As long as you don't expect to compete for National Titles. The days are long past since the most elite kids (in 4-5 consecutive classes that form a team) value Notre Dame's education and see South Bend as an elite destination. You'll get a couple. But not enough and not consistantly enough. Couple that with draconian punishments once they get here and you get a lot of 8-4 and 9-3 seasons.

Yay.

If that is what it takes to develop some teenagers into men with a future outside of the NFL, that the vast majority of them will not make, then yep I'm OK with that since that's what a university should be. They may be what you call "draconian punishments" compared to the Bama's of the world but that's because they value football over everything. I hope Notre Dame never stoops to their level even if it means seasons of 8-4 and 9-3.

YAY!

Yes, because Ohio State and Alabama kids don't wind up being good men after graduating. There is a culture of failure, crime and delinquency associated with all winning schools not named Notre Dame... Sure.

IMO, the entitlement, delusion and arrogance of many in the ND fanbase is perfectly in line with the administration's lack of commitment to winning.

It seems most of the time the coverage was there and LSJU knew they could draw a PI by entangling arms with the defender.

Show me where I said one thing about Ohio State and Alabama not being good men or anything about what you mentioned above. I'll wait............If you think it is delusional that Alabama is looked at as a football factory then maybe you should read your paragraph again.

My shocking, "arrogant" post that I like to see Notre Dame players graduate over winning what in the end is just a football or basketball game says much about what is wrong in investing your lives so deeply in just a game.
