Shotgun in short yardage

Just watched Lynch get stuffed on 4th and half a yard. The announcer immediately said: "That is why I don't like the off set shotgun on short yardage; come under center." There you go. ND goes shotgun all the time on short yardage with the same result. Go under center and give your back a chance to charge the line.

The guys on TV are only speaking their opinion just like you and I. You can run the same plays (other than sneak) from shotgun as you can from under center. Plus, Notre Dame is a shotgun offense with no under center, so it doesn't make sense to have someone do something they don't practice.

My issue is that I don't know if we are running these obvious running plays with two TE's or not. It doesn't appear that we are. I like having Luluta in the backfield also as opposed to attached to the line.

IMO between Kelly, Denrock, Sanford ,Heistand they will figure this issue out , they better or it's going to be a long season . This issue is fundamental and if the personnel is in place ( OL ) Procise - Kizer there is no reason why you can't pick up 1-2 yds at will esp against a 500 team . This is football 101 stuff...as Kelly stated yesterday the 3rd down offense was completely unacceptable . I trust they will make whatever adjustments are necessary to turn yesterdays folly into a strength

I agree. They will get it sorted out but it's troublesome that they wouldn't get it sorted out during the game. I don't have the stomach to rewatch the game but I don't recall seeing Luluta in the backfield as a lead blocker on any of those 3rd and short runs. I'd be shocked if he wasn't but the formations didn't look anything like what we saw against LSU.

I hate running short yardage from the shotgun. It always seems to get stuffed. We got stuffed yesterday several times, Oregon got stuffed by MSU as well. Not a fan of that formation in short yardage.

They should be practicing it ..... Lou Holtz had a package just for short yardage .... the Power T ... and it almost always worked ..... when Bob Davie came over from Texas AM as their D coordinator he commented on what a pain in the butt it was defending .... ALSO .... not having a QB sneak as an option is an incredible disadvantage .... good teams use this often and it is damn effective

Funny thing is that we have the O-line that should kill most teams in short yardage and we are in fact terrible at it ..... TOTAL SCHEMATIC DISADVANTAGE

Sad to say but 3rd and 1 is a passing down for ND

How long were the 3rd and 4th and 1's? A whole yard or inches? Perhaps they would sneak it in a 3rd/4th and inches, but a full yard is too long if the defense is stacking the lone of scrimmage. Its easy for you to say "they should be practicing it", but if you never go under center, some would say you're wasting time by practicing that. Remember that some teams even use shotgun when kneeling the ball. Again, you're not going to run formations that Lou ran or possibly other formations just for fourth and inches because you don't run stuff you don't know and some think its better to spend the practice time elsewhere. I'm mostly playing devil's advocate. I'm not sure if they would sneak on an inches to go situation.

Also, so what if they stopped a couple 3rd and 1's? That happens sometimes because of the playcall the other team happened to be in vs. the one ND happened to be in and happened to out execute. ND ran a slower developing counter play on 4th and 1 and got 3-4 yards...

They should be practicing some short yard package ..... with a QB under center ..... practicing converting 1st downs is never a waste of time

I have never claimed to be a coach, or even know any football schemes but I like to keep it simple. If you have one yard to go, why start 5 yards back? But thats why they get paid the big bucks!

How I long for the Power T in short yardage. So simple yet so effective. Sometimes these coaches try to be too smart for their own good. KISS.

What I don't understand is why we didn't one time try to convert a 3rd and 1 on a perimeter run. UVA was selling out inside to stuff the run. Seems like a jet sweep or a quick pitch to the outside would have done wonders there.

Jack:
yep! everyone wants to do the usual in an unusual way to get that focus on them. Football coaches are like rock stars or reality stars; the more extreme or out of the norm the more notoriety they get! the more notoriety, the more attention; the more $.

so in your opinion they do NOT even practice that?

It's possible, but I'm not sure. Another thing to consider is a handoff has a bigger potential to gain more yards while sneak, with a crowded line of scrimmage, will get minimal yardage.

I'm not necessarily defending Kelly. I'm just presenting the other side of the argument. If its a long yard needed for a first, I wouldn't agree with sneaking it at all.

Tenuta was dialed in on all of Kelly's tendencies - he exposed our QB and short game.

Obviously a sneak is not always the answer ..... but sometimes it definitely is .... point being .... it should be an option for us and it's not

I don't know about this year, but doesn't Kelly sometimes have you line up in the pistol? Use pistol 2-3 times per game. Pass out of it once in a while (just to show that you can). Then you can have a power running formation when needed.

"Tenuta was dialed in on all of Kelly's tendencies - he exposed our QB and short game"

LMAO!!!! What part of BK's "short game" was he dialed in to? The chipping or the putting. Was Tenuta dialed into BK's tendency of throwing the deep ball to Fuller? Sure didn't seemed too dialed in to me. So UCLA scores 37 versus UVA at home and the whole country is drooling over Rosen. ND scores 34 against UVA on the road and Tenuta was dialed in to ALL of Kelly's tendencies.

It must be a bona fide miracle ND scored 34 points on 207 yard passing and 253 yards rushing with no turnovers.

UCLA was up 34-9 and manhandled va.

We "miraculously" escaped with a W on what I hope to be the first of tons of legendary throws from Kizer.

Carry on "coach" you are certainly entertaining.

Exposed our short game ? Please be specific and identify plays where Tenuta was dialed in and exposed our " short game " ?

Fact is if our OL does it's job that game was over @ the end of the first qtr .

The two issues from Sat were

  • OL in red zone and 3rd and short running plays
  • secondary play

BTW -

Zaire was sub per throwing the ball 7-18 and we were 0-10 on third down and we scored 34 pts w a missed FG and two empty trips into the red zone early where we did not get TD's .

If we convert in red zone and kicker makes a kick ND scores 45 pts - not bad for a trap game on the road .

Ok then.....If ND is going to run out of the shotgun on short yardage why don't the coaches direct snap to the RB? I'm not saying do this every time but they have to STOP the slow exchange between QB and RB. When I watch other teams run running plays the QB exchange to the RB is QUICK. It seems with ND there is always a delay every time. I'm not talking about the read option run play either.

WE ARE ND!!!

ND has got to get better

Well genius UCLA was up 34-9 because their defense came to play? ND was up 26 to 14 in the 3rd quarter and if the defense would of came in and dropped the hammer the game would of surely ended up a similar score, Now, I get defense is way too tough for a football illiterate like you to grasp, and it's so much easier to talk offense because that's what a clown like you plays on your video games.

However trust me the problem with ND is not the offense it's the defense. So a village idiot like you can keep droning on and on and on and on about the offense but TRUST ME you are completely clueless. None the less even a football dope like yourself should be able to grasp the fact 34 points and 460 yards are in the books and that should be more than enough against an opponent like UVA. But then again cvgr you never cease to disappoint with your inane observations.

I would of responded sooner but I was at football practice. Now go get your shine box cvgr.

Fl Irish - i have cvgr on ignore -- is he still a douche bag??

I just watched the last drive again - Kizer may have the "IT" factor - stay tuned . That play to Fuller he gathered himself and just snapped the game winner -- BIG TIME PASS BIG TIME - If that's a snap shot we have have a star @ QB .

Still think we should have had 3 touchdowns in the first quarter against Virginia . When they made stops and then we missed field goals .Put life into Virginia sidelines. Changed the tenor of the game. Then their short passing game started taking. its' toll . ND even though we took the lead ,looked deflated in the last quarter .

Who called the Kizer to Fuller pass.? Did Kizer just take it upon himself .? I thought Kelly just wanted to get in field goal range.
.

I have watched so many college and NFL games this weekend and I can't tell you how many times teams were third or fourth and short and went out of the gun to run and DID NOT get it. GET UNDER CENTER.

Listen Sandusky point out one thing I said about the offense. You really are entertaining. Would you care to revisit your thoughts on power football? Ucla manhandled virginia. We didn't. Now stop trying to attribute your moronic thoughts to me. It is quite boring when you build a straw man, attribute it to me and then try to argue. That is called talking to yourself. You are underwhelming and I am sure every kid you coach is worse off for it. I am also sure you thoroughly enjoy showering with teen boys.

The 4th and short in the shotgun has driven me nuts since bk has been here. News flash, it seems to never work. Being the so called offensive guru he thinks he is, you would think he would fix this.
