Rumor mill

Why would a NFL them want a coach that can't win big in college? Unless NFL is starting to play low level teams like umass, wake, BC and others I don't know why they would look at Kelly cause he can't beat top programs.

There are a lot of thngs that you don't know.

yep

the Giants once hired Ray Handley and the Jets had Charlie Winner and even Rich Kotite!

As a giants fan not going to happen if there going to go unproven nfl coach they will hire there OC who Eli loves.

I think Kelly starts those rumors to get another pay raise and hold the university hostage. NFL is looking for big time winners so I doubt they are looking at Brian Kelly who can not even beat teams like Stanford who have less talent.

Why are you here? Tell us, what makes a person go to another team's board and behave like a total dick?

This is actually true. I have had legitimate conversations with people who are personally tuned into the program. Basically, Brian Kelly believes he will get an NFL job more than anyone. And that includes every GM in the NFL.

he had better not leave till those NLI signings are in!
if he does, Jack has to have the name (Sanford, the heir apparent) ready within 24 hours That is probably the only name that would hold the recruiting class together. Recruits and families like and trust Sanford. AND the guy can coach!

Fiesta Eve thru Mar. 31 ND fans may be in for a bumpy ride.

Recruiting will have no effect on BKs decision.

Edit: This year's recruiting class and insuring it stays together will have no effect on BK'S decision. If he is tried of having to constantly recruit that could be a reason to jump to the NFL.

Also you don't want to rush the hire.

even if interviews that does not mean he takes or gets offered the job

What would your explanation be as to why Turnover Machine starts these rumors?

Your wrong. There iwould be urgency to get the HC settled. If the recruiting class falls apart, ND will be set back, facing at least 3 years of rebuilding just to get back to where it stands today. If that happens ND may never return to prominence.

Hopefully Jack does not share your lack of urgency and understands 'times have changed'; things happen a nano speed now.

(I do agree that BK will do whatever is in BK's interest with only public expression for ND's future but little genuine concern for ND. He is no exception to the rule on this account. Coaches do this all the time)

Having a sense of urgency and hiring someone within 24 hours are not the same thing.

^ if you think the 24 hours or process starts at the vacancy and you are correct, then JS has his head up his butt!

It has once been reported that Kelly once said that if he were to be offered a NFL coaching that he would want complete control ? Is this true ? Can't believe that another college coach would have that much control especially when a new unproven college coach has no pro experience .

Maybe Harbaugh of Michigan .He has been successful at pro level getting into SB and college

First off I doubt this is a legitimate rumour. Brian Kelly is 54 and I think he is tiring of Notre Dame and I think Notre Dame is likely tiring of Brian Kelly a little bit. I personally think Brian Kelly stays at Notre Dame as he will not have the same power in the NFL and I think he tries to coach for another 4-6 years and then retires to the TV booth or politics.

The N.Y. Giants job is a pretty lucrative one and I highly doubt they will go out and hire someone like Brian Kelly who has not been able to win any / more big games at Notre Dame.

Agree Redrum, but there are some very stupid owners / gm's in the NFL. 49ers Jed York case in point. He ran out a great coach in JH. Can easily seem some NFL team get bamboozled by BK and his agent - if BK does indeed want to move onto the NFL. Like you not sure how his tenure at ND warrants an NFL gig.

so many of you doubt that Kelly's agent will be reaching out to NFL GM's? So you guys think this is far-fetched?

Even if JS thinks BK may be looking to take a leap to the pros he can't start interviewing people until it actually happens. Reaching out to other coaches while you still have a coach is a recipe for disaster if it gets out. Also, a lot of coaches aren't going to make any kind of commitment to ND with BK still there out of respect for BK.

I am not saying the search needs to take a month but logistics involved would dictate at least a few days to a week to set up interview, hold interviews, make a decision, work out details of the contract etc...

Anything is possible and I think the Giants owners are obviously patient people so I think a hire of Kelly is a little out of the box for them. I would expect someone with NFL experience. The one thing is at least Kelly would be use to the media scrutiny....though I think it would be worse in New York than at ND where many seem to be happy with 9 or 10 win seasons.

I think Kelly has made it clear he will listen to offers from the NFL. That isn't exactly breaking news.

I don't think that an NFL team will be able to hire him on the cheap though. It will take a strong offer to get him to consider leaving South Bend. Getting a big offer seems unlikely, but who knows?

Stay tuned...

He can reach out all he wants, that doesn't mean anyone is reaching back. With the Chip Kelly sting still fresh, this will be a tough year for any college coach not named Saban on Meyer to get an NFL job.

Agree Twalsh, but there are a lot of NFL openings this season. Bk and his agent could easily bamboozle some NFL owner / gm into a potential job - that is - if BK has his heart set on the NFL.

The lousy thing is - if that happens we don't finish the recruiting season strong like we currently have a chance to do and we would have some of the current verbals easily poached from us.

I think BK can get it done at ND - he just needs to tweak a few things - hopefully he is not too stubborn to make changes where he needs to make changes. His recruiting has been very solid. He works hard at it. If he leaves ND for NFL - ND will suffer a serious set back for this years recruiting cycle.

Giants job is now vacant, and just that vacancy itself can affect ND commits or targets thinking.
Even if denials are issued, fans and prospects know how binding and reliable those promises are.
