Reading Coach Kelly's comments today it sounds like we have a big time DE in the house .

Sheldon Day has clearly shown himself, but Isaac Rochell is a beast," said Kelly when asked if the defensive line has improved. "If he continues to play at this level, he's virtually unblockable in a 1-on-1 situation. Our guys have a very difficult time blocking him. He's faster, stronger. He's an outstanding player."

Sorry for typo on Isacc's name - humble apologies

Yea, this really caught my attention as well. Also noteworthy is Kelly's insistence that Rochelle will not be moved inside as a permanent replacement for Jones, situational, but not permanent. Cage and Tillery must be looking pretty good.

Telx1, he isn't big enough to take the everydown beating on the inside. Doesn't make sense to sacrifice what he can offer ND on the outside at the end spot even if he has the potential to situationally be better then Tillery or Cage because of experience.

Sal, apparently Kelly and staff agree with you, at least from the perspective of where he can make the most impact. Personally, I don't think 6'3 and 287 is necessarily too small to play inside. Clearly too small for a 3-4 alignment, but not necessarily for a 4-3. Regardless, my point was that Kelly and staff must like what they are seeing out of Cage and Tillery at this point, and that's a positive development.

I'm pretty sure Kelly referred to Tillery as a prodigy last spring .

If Rochell is in fact an impact edge rusher than he won't be used inside , having Schmidt back will be huge for Tillery and Cage

Agreed but also feel that having Grace and Morgan will help as there are going to be times as there were last year when Schmidt just gets physically overwhelmed.

IMO the big key defensively this year is getting pressure on passer with 4 lineman .

If Rochell is an impact guy off the edge I would throw the dice on some 3rd down situations and have J Smith come off the other edge as a DE opposite Rochell on the other side .

Kelly not moving Rochell inside has NOTHING to do with his size -- he has surfaced as a legit perimeter pass rusher - a huge area of need . He is not moving inside for that reason and because Cage and tillery will be suitable replacements for Jones . Tillery was going to get multiple reps in that position before Jones got hurt

Point counter point -- cmon SAL you and purse can get one positive comment in before the season starts -- I know you can do it .

You just restated my point and emphasized the Cage and Tillery's role in Rochell not moving inside. Rochell is much better situated on the outside for his skill set and size. Rochell gives up 25 lbs + to both Cage and Tillery. To take the type of beating playing inside and trying to eat up the middle would be a poor use of his skill set.
