RIP Eric Penick

I remember the Sugar Bowl; new years eve. That got changed.
Screaming as he ran it in.

Nail biting until Tom Clements to Robin Weber for the crucial first down that sealed it.
One of the greatest plays in ND history.

That 85 yard TD run was one of the seminal plays in ND history. It spurred us on to beat the Trojans for the first time in seven years and also propelled us on to the 1973 national championship. Just superb.
Yep, that was a TD run that will live forever in Notre Dame lore. I was a student sitting in the stands in that game, and I know I will never forget the play. The stadium was literally shaking when Eric crossed the goal line. It was bedlam. I remember there was a lot of celebrating that night on the campus after the game!

ND hadn't beaten USC since we handed them a 51-0 beat down in 1966, but oddly, we tied them in consecutive years (1968 and 1969). Those were some great rivalry games with two legendary coaches, Ara coaching the Irish and the great John McKay coaching USC.

RIP, Eric.

Yep, although I was too young to remember it my father always referenced it and Al Hunters kickoff return in the Sugar Bowl as the two most important plays that season.

after we wiped USC in 66 Mckay supposedly said that USC would never lose to ND again.
So beating him in 73 was sweet.

Unfortunately what happened in 74 wiped that out and convinced Ara to retire.

If you look at Tom Clements career stats, you would think he was a mediocre at best QB

Only 54% completion rate and 24 RDs vs 29 INTs
in three seasons as a starter, he only had one year, 73, where he threw more TDs then picks
He had 8 TDs vs 6 INTs

for those that claim stats are everything, I submit this as evidence they are full of crap

OUR Immortal cool Joe, Montana only had stats virtually the same
a lower completion rate (52%) but 25 vs 25 TDs to INTs
