For context:

The NCAA has not issued a mandate requiring “official injury reports” and they have deferred those decisions to each conference and colleges/universities.

Currently, only the SEC requires football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball coaches to give an “official team injury report”. Prior to the 2019 season, the ACC required football injury reports to be disclosed on Thursdays before each conference game.

Many sports betting agencies and state gaming officials have pushed for mandatory injury reports to avoid potential betting irregularities based on potential “insider” information. The former Alabama baseball coach did this very thing, when he had a friend place a bet prior to him scratching his starting pitcher. The NCAA released the following statement after their investigation into that situation:

"Coaches, student-athletes and administrators have access to information deemed valuable to those involved in betting. Improperly sharing that information for purposes of sports betting cuts to the heart of the honesty and sportsmanship we expect of our members and is particularly egregious when shared by those who have the ability to influence the outcome of games."

At ND, Coach Freeman gives an injury status update during his Monday press conferences, but Coach Ivey is often silent on the status of her players. For example - shortly after the injury to Miles in March 2023, Coach Ivey stated the exact nature of her knee injury is "undisclosed for her privacy."

The questions:

Should the NCAA require colleges/coaches to make “official injury reports” each week during the season? Example: every Thursday during the football season and every Tuesday for all other sports.

Should each college sport have the same requirement in reporting?

Should every student-athlete have to sign a “release form” as part of their scholarship?
