I think that the impact of this game on the season and, more importantly, the trajectory of ND football equals the Catholics vs. Convicts game. Now...before you bring in national championship results into the equation...they don't apply. ND needed desperately to beat Miami.....and they did. I think beating OSU this year equals in value and necessity of the program. This thread is not about winning a championship..its about triggering a major move forward for the program...just as it was in 88 when that game happened.

I agree that this game is the first big test for our season and dictates our outlook on the year.

I’m not sure if it’ll be quite as big as both Miami and ND were top 5 teams and undefeated in mid-October. The magnitude was certainly larger with national championship implications but the Ohio State game will certainly carry weight.

Theres so much in question right now with the OSU game. New QBs on both sides. Question marks with OSU’s O-Line as well as our D-Line and S positions. Im pretty shocked we’re currently 8pt underdogs and expect a close game if not an Irish victory.

I guess we’ll only know the true magnitude after the season.

Nc state is better than people think. And we'll have to show up and play well to win

This is a defining game for Freeman imo. Not bc he can’t survive a loss, but bc a win changes things drastically. Win it and he has a chance to make 2025 recruiting become “The class” of the Freeman era. Go 11-1 or 12-0 and beat Ohio State and USC and he will have all the worlds credibility as a coach to back up his recruiting ability. Michigan and even Ohio State could get left in the dust for some recruits if he dominates this season. He will become the hottest coach in the country.

Driskell said the other day he wants Ohio State to be good. I disagree. Screw Ohio State. Yes, I’d like to beat them when they’re good but I’d rather we beat them and they lose 2-3 games. I’d like to see the Midwest recruiting momentum swing to ND. Screw Michigan too. I’d like to beat them in the playoffs.

Agree 100 %

Critical game for the program !

Agree it is a huge game! If we win, Sammy Boy is going to be a Heisman finalist, and much of the bad narrative loses its edge. But, ND Miami was just so special. You could almost feel the CF world being righted on its axis. To borrow from the great Jim Croce, "when the epic games get together at night, they all call 1988 Miami/ND Boss."

What "bad narrative...?"

"....barely played..." 118-193, 1265, 11-4

At least get your facts straight.
He played in 5.5 of their 13 games.

We already know how they play without him because they played more games without him than with him last year

Surprised you didn't mention Clemson. At all. Are you guys taking a W as a foregone conclusion?

Thank God DJU and OC are gone so im cautiously optimistic in a playoff potential team. Think the D will be very good. Think Cade can be a good one and while our Oline is rarely great, think it will be good enough. Wr is by far our biggest weakness but im hoping that was a product of sporadic qb and terrible OC pat couple yrs.

Cant wait.

You only play 12 to get to 13. All 12 regular season games, every damn one of them, they're all big games.

Golson---Didn't NC State struggle without Leary?

Regular season games mean nothing for ND now other than it being either a win or a loss.

What they "need" to do is win a post season game against a highly ranked, big name program. Period. If they beat OSU at home in the 5th game of the season it's not going to have any more of an impact than the wins against OU, Clemson, or whatever. It will be nowhere near as meaningful as it would've been to beat them in either of the 2 Fiesta Bowls where they got whipped.

This team is going to have no other perception than living off its (distant) past accomplishments until that starts to happen.

LMFAO.

What a clown post.

I would disagree with you -- beating a team of OSU's caliber, regardless of whether it is the 5th game or not, puts ND back on the map of an upward trajectory, not only in the eyes of the media, but the eyes of recruits. These are the types of games ND has lost over the last 10-15 years for the most part. So, yea, this game could have a major impact on this season. It also would Freeman in a spot as being someone who can finally lead ND to the promised land (now, he still has some growing to do, but, a win like this would be huge for him in many ways).

And, what would really cap it off would be winning against USC a few weeks later (that is assuming there are no stumbles against Duke and Louisville in between).

Notre Dame and OSU have played seven times. Notre Dame hasn't beaten OSU since 1936....and has lost five straight games....stretched over the last 9 decades. ND has played Miami 26 times....with a favorable record of 18-7-1 for ND. Even Lou lost both games against OSU. I concede some degree of apples and oranges. But given the degree to which ND and OSU drink from the same recruiting trough....this game is enormous. None of us has ever experienced a Notre Dame win over Ohio State....unless we are well into our 90s plus.

Tend to agree, with the exception of the “same recruiting trough”

ND’s academic standards eliminate a significant portion of that trough.

You just can't compare the eras any more. A loss used to put you on the outside looking in at the national title picture. St Lou in particular got 1 and done treatment from the polls even though he would have been a favorite against the named national champion on a neutral field.

In the 4 team playoff era a loss meant at team used up their mulligan.

Now an early season loss in a high profile OOC reduces you playoff equity by 3%.

True -- you cannot compare era's anymore. BUT, from a recruiting point of view -- it is huge. We all talk about getting on par with the elite -- a win here, gets ND to that level.

100. And when the CFB Playoffs go to 12 teams, 10-2 will get you in.
