Can I be "Captain Obvious" for a moment and say if Drew Pyne starts vs. Cincy ND wins the game.
A few thoughts from the Wisconsin and Cincinnati game are Pyne is really sharp on the 3 step passes. He is very accurate and very confident when he knows where the ball is going. His pre snap reads had him throwing some passes extremely quick. I know he was 9-22 in the game as his inaccuracy came on the crossers he missed, and what Drew Brees talked about the option routes. Those option routes are all about reading the coverage and from the looks of it he was not on the same page 2-3 times with Lenzy. With the confidence and poise Pyne plays with you would have to believe he will clean those up if he is the starter moving forward. Pyne hit Styles for a 1st down, and looked really good throwing curls and the timing out route passes.
Just the flow and the rhythm of the offense seems much crisper. From the film I got a sense Rees is more comfortable calling plays with Pyne. With Pyne the run game opened up as Rees called more spread out formations. We saw trips, bunch, doubles, doubles with receiver's stacked, Tyree and Williams together motioning 1 of them out. With Mayer out ND used Takacs with his hand in the ground tight end 11 formations which helps in the run game instead of using the tight end as a wing. The threat of Pyne scrambling is very real, and I hope we see him keep it once on a zone read and make these defensive ends stay at home.
Of course the pass to Austin was a huge drop and momentum killer after ND scores and the defense forces a 3 and out punt series on Ridder and the offense. Another one not talked about is the last pass to Davis, which looked like the same route and it sure seems like Pyne threw it perfectly again. These 2 passes stopped drives, and with Pyne in charge ND could have scored on each drive.
Moving forward Rees should call as much quick game as possible with Pyne. Pyne is comfortable with these plays, and it sure helps out the offense line. Some of those doubles stack formations had ND in advantageous numbers on the perimeter, and with Pyne quick release these can become big plays. Go back and watch Alabama last year and how many times did they throw passes under 5 yards that went for 25 plus and more? Should be a fun night this upcoming Saturday in Blacksburg.
