Thanks to all who submitted questions for our latest podcast. These are the topics I tackled with @Eric Hansen (with timestamps).
29:02 | Babaganoush - @PLACT_ITFDB: What else can ND do to put Pyne in a position to succeed w/ the pass? It’s maddening to see the same thing the last 3 games & continue to see bounced screen passes or wide open misses. I feel for the kid but isn’t it becoming an untenable situation
34:18 | Marie Biafore - @biafore_marie: What do you think needs to be done to get Pine some confidence? What would you do with scheme? Have him come out of the pocket a little bit and make some easy passes? More play action? More RPOs? Also, would you Bring in a sports psychologist this week?
39:46 | Andrew Barlow - @Barlandrew: It's pretty clear Pyne has the yips. Should ND bring back their sports psychologist? (I seem to recall her tenure ending when Kelly's did...)
43:27 | @MrJoeSiler: With Colzie, Evans, Merriweather and Thomas making strides, how good could the ND passing game be if Pyne looks for someone other than Mayer?
47:06 | @SullyFenton: Do you think ND goes after some receivers in the portal or rolls with the freshman class coming in?
51:02 | @CharlesWWolfe: Given the struggles in the passing game, are we staring at a Georgia 2019 offensive game plan, with a few Michael Mayer shots sprinkled in?
54:00 | @sjb75: With regard to Notre Dame winning Saturday night, do you believe Tommy Rees and the Notre Dame offense, or Al Golden and the Notre Dame defense have more pressure on themselves for the team to win?
56:30 | @ldlgoirish: We are 2/3 of the way into the season. I always felt from one viewpoint to be a great team your stars need to play to that level. The stability players (think Bertrand) need to consistently do what they do. If those two things happen the role players and upcoming players will play above their expected level in the shorter number of plays they would be on the field.
I think the stars have not performed to the back of their card so to speak. On D Foskey, Jayson A, Joseph and Liufau are those star players. The defense has been coming on recently but over the course of the season I believe all 4 have performed below expectations.
As an example Foskey played to an 80 grade last year. This year's PFF grade is a 73. More markedly Jayson A has played to over 70 every year at ND until this year at 62 and dropping. Has he healed? He was expected to be a stud this year. Did we expect too much from Marist?
On O JP has been over 10 points below his previous 2 seasons where he averaged around 80. Is he still hurt. I believe the coaches will have the players ready for Clemson. I also believe the game plan will be strong. Yes ND will need to win the turnover battle and the special teams battle. Besides those 2 items and having some semblance of a passing game, the stars need to shine. Can They? Why haven't they? (I excluded Mayer who has).
1:07:40 | @iRobertDoyle: Hi Tyler, Eric. Weird season, eh? ND is really two plays from being 6-1 and playing a top ten game against Clemson. But we don't live in the land of 'what ifs'. Question - Does Marcus still 'have the room' so to say, with the seniors? Thanks!
1:12:34 | @ndtarheel7: How likely is ND in serious communications with a QB currently committed elsewhere and/ or with one not yet committed? With the almost deafening silence surrounding QB recruiting right now, the staff has to be devoting serious time to finding someone, right? Has any reporter straight up asked Freeman/ Rees lately about the enormous elephant in the room?
