Postion changes

That's great news. Adds depth to both positions. I could see Matuska being a mauler in the run game.

I think Monteleus moving to the DL is a bit of a mystery considering that Elmer moved on . I thought he would compete at a guard position. This tells me three things:

1- Bars is going to be healthy and play guard and they are going to cross train Mustipher at guard as well

2- The red shirt DL are not very good.

3- They cannot recruit DL and have decided to move an athletic type of lineman to the defense .

I hope it works out for him.

They traded Matuska for Monteleus.

Agreed. Monteleus was supposed to be a big time guard for ND. Maybe he's not impressing the coaches as expected, so they're giving him a chance elsewhere. Unfortunately, it looks like these 2 position changes are made due to necessity for depth rather than putting a player in the best position to succeed. I doubt either will be much if a factor and if they're playing meaningful minutes, then ND could be in trouble.

Changes for depth and or putting a player in position to succeed are not necessarily mutually exclusive.[imho] Montelus also has a reputation for being one of the strongest men on the team so maybe a move to dl is not that much of a mystery.

Coach Kelly said there would be a player switched to TE, and the announcement would come on media day before spring practice began. With 8 upperclassmen and 2 redshirt freshmen, I would be surprised if there's a move from OL to DL. There's talk that Mark Harrell will come back now to add depth on the OL. I personally like the move if it should happen. Why let a talented player waste away his eligibility if he can help in another area.

Matuska is replacing Luatua as blocking TE- makes sense. Montelus is strong and can back up Jones,Cage and Tillery should one get injured [let's hope not]. Hoge could be versatile at guard and center- a plus either way[ I prefer him at center]. He will be All-America at center position in future. The moves only help with depth. O-line will be fine. Ruhland is going to better than most think at guard soon.

If Montelus had the athleticism to play OG he can play DT . Question will be his explosiveness and tenacity . Time will tell

Kelly and staff have done a pretty good job with position changes in the past, so every reason to think this will prove beneficial as well. Some think this kind of move signals weakness, and I choose to think it signals strength. Both players are talented young men who are buried in the depth chart at their current positions, and to be able to move them to role positions elsewhere attests to our OL depth and talent.

Matuska to TE makes some sense with luatua leaving and the fact that he played TE pretty well iirc in high school. Not sure outside of injury if he ever made it past 3rd on the depth chart on the d side of the ball.

As for montelous moving to dt, I'm not concerned about the oline as HH has recruited well and even with Elmer leaving early it's our best stocked position group. But I am concerned this may mean something is brewing on the d side. Does this signal somebody leaving (Hayes or didn't someone mention something about tillery being more interested in scholastic endeavors?) or just a general lack of confidence in what otherwise appears to be a pretty deep group (maybe not elite but otherwise stacked with pretty good players)? None of these are good if any are true. Not trying to spread any rumors, I know nothing, just wondering.

I like that Montelus is going over to help out on defense - unless there are injuries OL depth is not really an issue as OL guys typically play every snap so it makes sense not to waste a kid like Montelus when he can get in to the DT rotation
