Goolsby’s Instant Takeaways

“The second half was much different than the first half; the first half was a little concerning. The instant takeaway is ‘what could have been.’ This really could have been one of those crazy Boston College kind of scenarios. The onside kick stands out; I think we got a little lucky there. After Kyren’s fumble, we got lucky with the errand shotgun snap that went right by Phil Jurkovec. You didn’t feel comfortable watching at home until the second half. It was a bit uncharacteristic. it was not championship level in the first half, but in the second half, you saw them fix the leaks and then they dominated from there on out. If a couple balls bounce differently, we could be talking about a loss here, really. If they had a few breaks go their way, who knows. Another takeaway is what a luxury having this offensive line is – they’re tremendous. They pulled Kyren today, but it seems like whoever they have in the backfield is going to succeed. Book continues to have all day to distribute the ball and I think that is a huge advantage.

Players Who Flashed

“The offensive line obviously flashed, but Book is going to be my other. He accounted for over 360 yards just himself I believe. Seeing him progress and get better from week to week has been awesome to watch. Obviously Ben Skowronek had a hell of a game. We keep saying this every week, but it seems like Skowronek and Book have really found some chemistry. I know in the preseason, Skowronek was my pick to be the leader in receptions and things are trending that way for him. C’Bo Fleminster looked great until he went out with the injury – talk about hard running. He is really trying to earn more playing time by running so hard and lowering his shoulder. Defensively, the depth is awesome. The depth really flashes, specifically with the front four. They are constantly rotating guys in and out and it seems like every week you have to go back to the roster and ask yourself ‘Who is that kid?’ I think that really lends itself to championship football and that is a great thing to see. Specific players on defense that I thought flashed were Bo Bauer and Jack Kiser.

“Kiser, yet again, with very limited playing time, he comes in and makes a play and forces a turnover. I love talking about linebackers and our two interceptions on the season are from backups, and I think it really poses the questions: How long are they going to stay backups? Bauer is always looking to get after the ball and is more fluid of an athlete than Drew White is. Bauer has this drive in getting to the ball that I just don’t see from Drew.nKiser, after he made that pick, I really don’t know if I saw Shayne Simon on the field again. Kyle Hamilton of course flashed; he nearly had a pick-six. That ball was tough for him to catch, it was at a funny angle so it was always going to be tough to catch. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah made some nice plays as always but really, the two backup linebackers flashed. I will be curious how that plays out through the end of the season.

Any worry of losing?

“Obviously, I have some bias from my days of playing against Boston College and my personal trauma from that. I was texting some former football buddies during the game after the turnovers and we were saying ‘We might as well throw on the green jerseys at half and pour more salt in the wound!’ The first drive of the game from Notre Dame was beautiful. We kind of hit a snag with the defensive penalties on that drive and only ended up with a field goal. I was never really concerned, even though Phil played a great game. He is a throwback kind of quarterback, like a quarterback from the 80’s. Overall, I was not that concerned but there was a ‘pucker factor’ for sure especially after that onside-kick scenario. I am a fan of Isaiah Pryor and he messed up there. That was a play Boston College saw on film and thought they could execute because of the way Notre Dame lines up on kickoff returns with guys off the ball like Jack Lamb and some others. The game made me a little bit nervous though because it did not feel as clean with the turnovers, but the workload and the wear and tear Kyren has been put through to this point this season, I wonder if it showed itself today. Kyren has lost two fumbles now and looked tired a little today. He got beat up last week and today and I liked that Kelly took him out of the game to give him some rest especially after his performance last week. There is still no question that he is the guy for Notre Dame in the backfield, but it was good to see Chris Tyree and C’Bo get some carries and let Kyren get some rest. That stuff matters, it really does. It gives you more time to groom Tyree and get C’Bo more carries that he deserves.

On Phil Jurkovec’s Play

“I really do like him. Phil is similar to Book in that they are both gamers and they are both scrappy players. Phil does a lot with what he has around him. He has a nice deep ball and really drops it in there. BC does not have a run game so it is really all on him in that offense.”
