Poof...Mark May gone.

ESPN has no one to blame but themselves. They wanted to be MSNBC Lite and now , in no small part, the chickens have come home to roost. The viewers and subscribers didn't take a knee on the writers, commentators, news readers, analysts, and announcers. Their blathering on everything from Kaepernick to the so called bathroom controversy was incredibly predictable and subscribers just plain had enough. Talk sports radio better take notice.

Cord cutting is less a political statement and more a reflection of people finding value elsewhere other than rising cable bills.

Ya.... as much as I wish this was a result of ESPN forcing liberal views down the throats of people just wanting to watch sports.... I believe this is a result of people (myself included) cutting the cord of cable.

I have gone two years now without paying for cable and because of Amazon Fire Stick and an app called Kodi, I have not missed anything on TV....... Oh, I also have a few friends 'logins' to be able to watch live sports on ESPN.

The Espn slide has very little to do with their "political agenda" but more to do with too much "E" and not as much "S". They have cut back on actual sports reporting and live sports presentations and have tried to lure the younger crowd with "entertaining" programs.
The only folks that believe they have a political "problem" are those who are always "right."

Interesting discussion, but I have no idea about any of this. I turn to ESPN only to watch live sports. I never watch any of the other stuff.

I do not believe the political leanings had everything to do with ESPN's death spiral, but I believe it had something to do with it. If people want something, they will find a way to pay for it. If that product is not satisfying, then the product becomes the first to go. There are several reasons why ESPN is struggling ( new technology, family money constraints) and their love affair with the bathrooms issue and the Niner QB, among other discussions, is definitely playing its part. The NFL and ESPN are in denial, even this morning. The hand washing on Chicago sports talk radio is amusing.

I've heard from a number of people who decided to drop their cable package. Not one person I've spoken to has made that decision because of any of ESPN's editorial comments. As you said, if they want a cable package, they'd pay for it; I'm assuming most people are not finding the rising cost of cable to be worth the return they perceive to be getting.

I think ESPN is contributing the rise of cord cutting not because of any editorial content, but more because of the fact that - if I am right - it commands the highest rights fees of any network.

It is highly unlikely that cutting the cord is a political statement, because if it was, it would be disconnecting conservative programs too. You can't just cut ESPN, Fox or MSNBC and keep the rest.

Get an Antenna for $20.... plug it in and you will get NBC/ABC/CBS in HD and probably 20 other channels for free.......

If you need more TV you can get any streaming device and get literally whatever you want (some for free and other services such as HULU will charge monthly).

Cable and Satellite will be obsolete in 5 years. Dish, Playstation, Youtube, and others are already working on streaming packages that are much cheaper.

Costs are a major factor, no doubt, but, there are actually subscribers who do not live on the two coasts who just may have differing opinions. I have ESPN and won't delete my access because I enjoy college football, college baseball, and 30 for 30. Opinion shows are out. The cliche' struck SportsCenter programs are out. Nothing like watching middle aged white guys trying to sound "dope". So, I find a system that works for me. Chicago sports radio talk shows are all amateur hour. Even there, I have the freedom to pick and choose.

I agree that there is an attempt to draw in younger people as in E. There is also not enough sports or the wrong sports so they can draw in women and maybe international people. However, there is a liberal left wing bias (Bruce / KaitlanJenner award) in their reporting and shows like Bob Ley show. They are the MSNBC or CNN of sports. Some friends of mine have canceled cable because of their liberal perceived presentations. That said I believe when they state that reason its more of a contributing factor. The main factor is cable cost and ESPN is driving force behind a lot of the high cost of cable I do not care about ESPN's social agenda so I do not watch unless there is a game that I want to watch. I would like to dump cable but get most of I would watch in the past. So if there is a way to stream in a way even my wife would be willing do with out making it to complex I would do it. So I reading about Sony vue and sling to see if that would be a good fit. Is there a better way without it being complex of getting local channels, PAC12 network, ESPN flavors, FS flavors , FOXNews, CNN etc, etc etc so any suggestions would be appreciated

I do not believe political bias has any connection to their struggles. They overpaid for multiple entities based on projected subscriber level and get a reduced rate of return per subscriber on pay as you go services such as Sling, PSVUE, DIRECTV Now. ESPN had a huge premium on existing cable and satellite providers that simply is eroding away as the way people view content evolves coupled with untimely expansion into college networks and online content. Sports News channels do have the obligation to cover sports topics. Its sad that people have regressed so much that they see TV in liberal and conservative ways as opposed for what it is... entertainment. You always have a remote to change the channel if you don't like what you are watching.

I use PSVue and love it.

the problem is not what it is. It appears more like a forced biased agenda no balance

It is all about Disney and Hearst wanting to pad the bottom line so their CEO's and stock holders can fly in their corporate jets and take their kids to private islands on vacation.

Not gonna be much tv to watch if the writers (who have seen their pay cut 30% while CEOs of major corporations they work for have salaries about 50 Million a year) go on strike.

Worst job growth in 3 years today and yet the stock market is climbing... Hmmm.. Wonder who is benefiting? Bernie had it right.

Bernie must of had it right.....I am sure he is sitting at one of his 3 houses.... probably the Beach house he bought after the election....

They grossly over paid for the NBA rights and this is the byproduct of that. Politics had zero to do with it.

What sports are the "wrong sports"?

I cut ESPN but retained and added other content. It was 100% due to their inability to refrain from pushing the liberal agenda.

It's cord-cutting. Their revenues are down. But do they really need all those analysts? They have a different CFB studio analyst team for ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, etc. They can probably consolidate those into fewer.

I personally think there is a generational sea change taking place in the world of sports. Amazes me how most of our friends adult children are not into sports all that much. They are active with running and the gym, etc... but seem to spend their discretionary money on travel and expensive dining, etc... they are the targets of the advertisers, and yet they are not the ones locked into their TV watching sports, at least not to the extent of the older generations. I also think this will directly impact on ND, as a brand and its marketing power. traditional winners will attract a national following, but I think the days of subway alums being rabid about ND football in general are numbered, as are cable TV.

I doubt any TV executives care about what you personally watch.

Is being asshole something you were born with or did you develop it over the years. I suspect you were born with it but perfected as with time.

It's this simple 25 years ago you couldn't find out about your team unless you watched a sports show like espn, or lived in that particular city. Today social media is breaking all the news and giving us the stories in real time. An we can stream live sporting events. It has nothing to do with political nonsense and whomever believes that is clueless. We all have mini computers in our hands with access to everything.

overall I think everyone agrees with your post. However, politics may be help move people leaving sooner that execs want

More and more people (especially younger viewers) are watching soccer. I think it's typically a better investment than some of the other sports.

They seem to be putting more and more soccer on, like English and European games on various cable channels. Personally, I have no interest, even though I played soccer for several years as a kid. I watch the World Cup and I watched that Copa America they had last year. But I don't get into professional soccer. Of course, I watch very little NBA or NHL anymore, either. As far as team sports, football and baseball are my primary interests.

Who is the ESPN sports network keeping? I know people have said that Michael Smith and Jemele Hill will be back .Can't stand either of them ! They are not good at all . Don't see them getting high ratings

Just curious ,how much do all of these sports announcers and analysts make .? They all can't be making 500,000 or 1,000,000 or more in salaries .Somebody posted it above . The people that get hurt the most are the technicians and film crews

I used to watch a few of the ESPN shows a few years back , but lately ,never watch the analysts . They rehash the same sports stories from morning to night .Awful! About the only things I do watch are live college football and basketball games .That's it .

I'll say it again .Michael Smith and Jemele Hill .Ugh

That new sportscenter at 6 could easily replace waterboarding by the military. Brutally bad!

Not being an asshole at all. Good for you, I suppose, that you don't watch soccer. But the fact that you don't doesn't indicate that it isn't becoming increasingly popular.

More and more people are watching the English and European games though. They aren't being televised because cable channels are trying to advance some liberal soccer agenda. They're being televised because more people are interested in watching them.

Spot on. Who will pay $100 for cable when they can get it for $30 on Sling, Kodi, etc.

Soccer is becoming more popular but it is still behind women's college basketball as far as ratings.

"Cutting the cord" for budgetary reasons is one way to look at it. There is also a good chance that the core viewers (keep it sports) saw Bruce Jenner win an undeserving ESPY award over an athlete who bravely fought brain cancer or and athlete who lost limbs in Iraq. Maybe the core viewers also saw the way ESPN covered the womens marches ad nausea...... foul language, foul attitude, threats and all. Maybe the core viewers saw the way ESPN covered the Kaepernick story. They saw all this and took notice. "Viewers are increasingly turned off by ESPN inserting politics into its sports coverage. If anyone wants to ignore that fact, they're blind"......Linda Cohn , long time ESPN sports anchor. It appears we have a few deniers here. I'm not saying this is a major factor. I'm saying it could be a contributing factor.
