With all the basketball threads around, I thought the grand game on ice should receive some focus, especially with the Stanley Cup being played.
I imagine the general claim will be that Wayne Gretzky is the greatest, and many will cite some factoid like "he has more assists than anybody else has points." However, Gordie Howe accumulated his glittering statistics while playing primarily against the Original Six. Then there's Mario Lemieux, whose career was cut short by health reasons and he was on a pace to rival Gretzky. Of course, nobody can forget Bobby Orr, who revolutionized the meaning of defenseman.
I left goalies out of consideration because that position is so apart from the rest of the game.
