Last evening we attended the Yearly Passion Play on the grounds of the Mormon Temple in the Phoenix Area. It is the largest outdoor Passion Play in the World ( so were told ). It is free of charge and open to all faiths. The cast of actors was hugh ! The settings and costumes were breath taking ! , and as far as we ( all Catholics in our group ) could determine, the play did not deviate from the bible. It was very inspiring !
Happy and Blessed Easter to all !

Was Pilate predestined to do his part? Did he have no choice? Without him, history would have been changed. Anyone have an opinion? A priest friend of mine years ago told me this is not true. I'm not seeing how though.

Same with Judas honestly... I can remember questioning this as a little kid lol

Toby ? What did the priest say is not true. ? That Pilot was pre destined ? I guess from a historical point of
view Pilot was pre destined to judging Jesus, but Pilot also had free will and " Washed his hands of the
whole situation . " He said that Jesus was innocent !
Judas is another problem. As I think about Judas, I believe that with our without him, the Jewish leaders at that time would have crucified Jesus ? I also believe that Judas was an evil man and Jesus ( as God man ) knew fully what was in Judas' heart and thoughts. Judas was acting on his own free will ?
I further believe that the only one who was pre destined ( for lack of a better word ) was Jesus, because
God, the Father, sent Him into the world for the attonement of the sins of Adam, Eve, and all mankind.
In any case, I find that there are a number of issues in the bible, life, and death that are certainly
mysteries ? It all comes down to faith.
I had a number ( a few times ) of experiences in life where I actually felt the present of a Divine Power. One was when I visited Mount Koressus in Ephesis in Turkey and the Shrine of the Virgin Mary. a feeling of absolute peace just overcame me !
I guess the " Priest ” in the movie Rudy said it best : " I know there is a God and It isn't me. "

My priest friend (actually a Monsignor) said the predestination theory is a false one because of free will, but, if Pilate didn't give the "go ahead" and if Judas didn't do his deed, the events of Good Friday through Easter Sunday morn wouldn't have happened as decried by prophets earlier or by Jesus himself. It had to happen in the order it went down, with the players involved, who seems to me had to be predestined in order for the prophecies to be fulfilled. In other words.....no betrayal, which means no trial, which means no crucifixion, which means no Resurrection, which might mean no Christianity. Where am I going wrong with this theory?

Toby,
I think that Pilot had very little to do with it, He just happened to be the Roman " Judge " to whom the Jewish leaders had to bring Jesus to, but Pilot found Jesus not guilty of any crime ans washed his hands of the matter. So if Pilot has his way, Jesus would have been free. But the Jewish leaders were the ones who
insisted that Jesus be crucified. Pilot had no choice but to give them their way to keep peace. So I don't think that even if there were another Roman in charge, The Crucifiction would not have taken place ?
Judas was an evil man, but even if Judas had never betrayed Jesus, the Powerful Jewish leaders
hated and feared Jesus so much that they would have done the same thing, eventually, with or without Judas !
The only place that I can see ( Pre destination ) is that Jesus was send by The Father to die for the sins of all mankind. Jesus knew this was his mission as he told his followers on many occassions.
"destoy this temple and I will raise it up in three days. "
In any case that is how I see it and what I believe !

Spearfish, SD (I think it was Spearfish) has an outdoor Passion play that runs all summer long. It has been years since I've gone over and seen it, but it is very well done too.

MT,
The one that I always wanted to attend was the one in Oberammagau, Germany. It s given every ten years
and just about imposable to get tickets. For those who never been to the area, There is the famous clock
in the main square in Frankfurt, Germany that depicts a number of historical events every hour, one of the events Is that the plague of 1600's stopped right near Frankfurt. The Town of Oberammagau pledged to
God that if they were not hit by the Plague, they would dedicate an outdoor theather to God, and do a Passion Play in every year ending with a zero. So once every ten years. The towns people are the actors
and have been performing the play going on 400 years.

My dad and I considered going to this back in 2000. We had an in for tickets. Climbed Kilimanjaro instead for New Years 2000. Always think about that trip whenever I hear about the passion, and would love to attend Oberammergau if the opportunity ever presents itself again.

God knows what you need before you ask.

Free will we have, but I would assume the creator of all space and time has a decent grasp of what your future decisions might look like.

Jesus is love.
