Legal proceedings are underway in the college basketball scandal where money was funneled to recruits. So far, it appears prosecutors are only going for low level operatives to insure a high probability of conviction. The attached article is an interesting read, for those so inclined, but if not, I'll at least share a quote from the beginning. Jerry Tarkanian, who had been hounded for years by the NCAA, often questioned why UCLA had not been targeted for similar, and well known, infractions, while small time outfits got hammered for less. When asked about this, Tarkanian replied, "The NCAA is so mad at UCLA they're going to put Cal State Northridge on probation."

The irony of Tarkanian's remarks, as noted in the final paragraph of the article is that, last week, the NCAA put Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on two years' probation and demanding it vacate its only NCAA Tournament berth for having given athletes too much money. Their crime? Giving them allowances for books, ranging from $5 to $734 over the limit, at a notoriously challenging academic institution. This would be fodder for great satire, but to make satire credible there has to be at least a shred of credibility, and this absolutely defies any notion of credibility.
