Ok, I'm early fifties and have always been in relatively good health. However, I haven't attempted to exercise for the last year. Today I did some calisthenics and went for a run. I had to cut the run short because my right knee and left hip felt like were bone to bone.

My question: is there any foods/supplements I can use to help me out?

I am in the same age range. I am currently training for a marathon (I have run 14 of them) early in December.
As you get older it takes longer to warm up. I used to be able to run fast from the start in my mid forties but now need a couple of slow miles to warm up.

I suggest you combine walking with running if you are just starting out or are running after a long layoff. Start walking to warm up to get the blood flowing to warm up your muscles and then run real slow for a bit. Build up over time where you can run more than walk but don't push it too much.

I have learned a big lesson from getting injured over the years especially as I get older that the most important thing when excercising (even weight lifting) is too NOT GET INJURED ! The older you get the longer it takes to get healthy after a injury ! So easy does it and listen to your body !

*** Also you will always have a little tightness or slight pain when you start running---- it should go away after you warm up and after running a ways when the endorphins start kicking in.

*** Sorry I can not help you with diet because I run alot so I can eat what ever the hell I want too !!

Life is to short to eat kelp !

Stop running. You're in your 50s. Go buy an elliptical. If you wanna feel manly, hang a bag in the garage. Dance around and throw some punches before the ND games.

You are screwed I am 63 when I turned 40 that was the first time I really noticed a difference when I was running I always used running as one of my primary ways to keep in shape no more my legs do not co-operate knees and all kinds of little things happen pain injuries etc sucks I have the desire I do not have the body and I am 6 ft 200 pounds

I can tell you that while this sucks, there is a reason why and that reason is that despite the cardio high and benefits you get from running -- it is not good for you time to do as others in this thread indicate

Cycling is excellent swimming is the best and Yoga lots of it I swear by yoga

Here is the best advice I can give you - if you have a knee or muscle issue and think you may need surgery to clean something up = try yoga for 2 weeks doing it every day I cannot believe what it has done for me I had knee clicking, no more after yoga

and diet - enjoy life but if you are serious about making some changes you need to incorporate more plant and veggie foods if it does not grow, do not eat it hard, to do, but even if you do some of this, you will see benefits

I also take glucosomine chondroitin for my joints I think it helps but cannot say for sure

Thanks Bodi! I was in the best shape of my life in my mid-40s. That's what gets me now - that was only a few (actually 8) years ago. It's funny how quickly we lose it and how (damned) long it takes to get it back at our age. I'll probably never run marathons like you do but I'm happy to run a 5K...I was doing that last year and can't seem to come close this year.

I have always been half afraid of yoga...not sure why. Maybe because it's a chick thing or maybe a hindu thing - I don't know. I will try it - I believe what you are saying.

If you're looking to change your body composition (aside from just getting in shape), look into counting calories. Calories in vs. calories out = weight loss or weight gain. Weight loss/gain doesn't simply come from eating "healthy" or "unhealthy".

That's all.

Thanks 44...that's typically what I do. I go on a soup diet and drop the 10-15 lbs that I accumulate. This seems different this time - I could always push myself in the past. This go round I feel it in my bones.

Chick thing.... Another good reason to to join a class
Seriously the advice about non-impact cardio is good advice. Join a gym and mix some cardio and some weights

Thanks Pennick. It makes a lot of sense to me and I've lost a lot of flexibility over the years as well so it surely can't hurt to try it out. Especially since I already have a membership to a gym that offers yoga classes.

IG

Believe me I am not and never was a yoga kind of guy my wife does it and I tried it one time and felt that it actually pulled a muscle but trust me on this give it a shot I recommend any dvd or on line class done by Rodney Yee he has a yoga sports dvd very good I tell you that I was sitting having dinner at an outside restaurant in Naples fla last December got up from my chair and my knee started clicking no pain but annoying I said - geez I have had 2 knee scopes and now this crap? I got home and started doing yoga within 3 days no more clicking I think at our age we need to keep flexible and stretch try it and let us know what works I don't do it religiously but enough to stay flexible

At your age, which is a fair amount younger than me, it's time to give up on the running. I know that some people can do it, but the reality is that most people's bodies are no longer equipped to handle it. Start training on an eliptical, maybe even two different elipticals to get variation in the gait. You will get your cardio, and your lower joints will love you and will last much longer. You should also do some lifting along with the cardio.

Thanks twalsh! I know you're right about the running but getting too old to do certain things is just such a tough pill to swallow :(
