Trophy hunter dies after wounded elephant crushes him in Zimbabwe

BBBnKrj.img

A big game hunter died Friday in Zimbabwe when a member of his hunting group fired their gun at an elephant striking it and causing it to fall on him.

The group had gone for a walk in the afternoon when three elephants stormed the group, News 24 reported. A fourth elephant stormed the group from the side and was shot. The animal grabbed Theunis Botha with its trunk, but collapsed and fell on him after being shot.

Botha was a specialist in hunting leopards with hounds. Game Hounds Safaris, Botha’s company, said in a statement that he pioneered the hunts using packs of dogs in southern Africa.

According to News 24, Botha was well known in Zimbabwe and helped recruit Americans for trophy hunting. The 51-year-old was highly regarded for his hunts, The Telegraph reported.

This thread wasn't about terrorism. But now that you bring it up, did you know ISIS raises quite a lot of money from poached Elephants and big cats so they can afford terrible terrorist acts against humans?

I didn't realize elephants needed a license to hunt big game hunters, but I'm glad to hear they had their paperwork in order.

just pointing out the facts. its amazing how people get themselves upset over animals and not people. and then bash people regardless of the point of view because none of you know that. Even though the facts are the facts it was a legal hunt. And you think that guy deserved to die. But somehow I have the evil opinion

here is the sick thing. since it was a legal hunt why is it Ok that a man who was killed had a wife and children and he deserved to die.

I think what often disgusts people is not the issue of legality. What disgusts people is that we trophy hunt in the first place, for the sake of killing something. We're the only species on the planet that makes the conscious decision to get on an airplane, fly to the other side of the world, and end a creature's life for the sake of an adrenaline rush and a few pictures.

Animals kill each other for survival. They act as each other's food source. That's why I have no problem with people who hunt or fish as their means of survival. That's no different than me eating meat from a grocery store. That's the food chain and we're at the top of it.

But I find it to be sick when a man made entity (money) and human boredom is enough to travel around the world simply to slay something with our advanced technology. The fact that having enough money makes that legal, sucks... Just as much as it sucks that some sick ass hole would put a nail bomb in a concert venue. Both are disturbing.

If you hunt to feed your family, I'm with you. I grew up hunting deer, birds and fishing in northern Ontario. My dad and brother still do... I've been to Africa on 3 separate occasions and I find it sick that North Americans travel over their to trophy hunt.

You might find it sick that I say this, but I've gone on record saying that it would be fun to let the CSOR guys and myself I served with hunt trophy hunters in Africa in our free time. Put all those learned tracking, and counter terrorism skills to use. I'm sure for enough money we could find someone to make that legal, right?

I agree iiO in essence. it was a trophy hunt that raised money for things like animal welfare. The irony. I am not for trophy hunting just against uninformed information. one thing that bothers me is people get more upset over an animal than people

Maybe branding the animals in places that render the hides useless might save them from poaching. Or maybe just spray paint enough to accomplish this?

Or arm the animals! i

At least there's some sport in that. If you can basically walk up to an animal while it stands there and looks at you, shooting it does seem kind of pathetic.

That's what I mean, there's some sport in that, it takes some effort, patience, and knowledge. You have an animal that will skedaddle like a bullet if you screw up.

And I would hope that you and your family enjoy the venison, which serves as a meal replacement for an animal you would have eaten from your grocery store or butcher. That's a far cry from hunting animals teetering on the brink of being endangered so that you can have a pelt. I think that's sick. And really no different than if I chose to hunt a big game hunter on the African safari. Actually, it would be more fair given that he has a weapon to defend himself and could always get me before I get him... Our new C14 Timberwolves are such a nice weapon though. Not even .40 caliber and it's just destructive. Effective at 1,500m, I'm getting better with it. Not nearly as good as some of the snipers, but I grew up shooting so I can more than hold my own.

Hunting is necessary for some. However, unless the animal is also outfitted with a rifle or bow, I wouldn't deem it much of a "sport".

... and what about shark attacks, what's up with that?

The reason they don't eat humans is that they hate the way we taste. They are fairly blind, however, and they mistake humans for their preferred food source, seals, who are also surface dwellers. When they bite us, they tend to immediately realize that we don't taste right and they let go. Unfortunately, the enormity and ferocity of their bite often leaves us bleeding to death, in a situation where we are likely to drown.

FWIW, I know you were kidding!

You get bothered about everything because you are a snowflake. I am surprised you have not melted in the Arizona heat.. You must stay inside with the air conditioning full blast.

Technically, the thread is about hunting big game hunters.

Unidentified sources speculate that the elephants' hunt may have been organized by rehabilitated criminal, now conservationist, Harvey Updyke. If true, the proceeds of the legal hunt are rumored to be earmarked for Auburn University's conservation efforts. Link.

Abortion and killing Elephants is wrong !
I agree 100% but it is "legal" we as Americans need to pray and vote men or women into office to put a stop to it!!

As far as elephant hunting goes in places like Zimbabwe, Tanzania, South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique and other countries, controlled hunting is legal.
