Off topic but was curious if anyone else has had this and how long does it last etc. Pain in lumbar spine , had mri saying disc protrusion in L4-5 impingement of L5 nerve root.

Any advice would be appreciated from personal experiences.

Initially, you would need anti-inflammatories (eg ibuprofen or naproxen) to try to reduce pressure on the nerve. Your doctor may also offer a short course of an oral steroid and/or muscle relaxant. Ultimately you may need to be referred to a spine specialist.

Yes. Actually one of most common herniations. Have had mine since HS, keeping core strong helps a lot

Yes. I stupidly tried to remove a double oven and a refrigerator during a kitchen renovation. Herniated that disc. Had the cushioned material bulging out from spine

Tried 2-3 injections. Didn’t work. A lot of people warned me about back surgery but they were thinking of big time surgery. For this herniation, a micro-discotomy is what is appropriate. 99% success rate. I had it done and you are up and back to normal same day I recommend it

Just had my first cortisone shot 2 days ago. Haven’t noticed any improvement yet. Actually felt a little worse yesterday. I’m about 4 weeks from my initial injury. Saw a spine specialist and had a mri confirm protruding disc. My doctor said I’m not a surgery candidate as of right now.

Did you have any side effects from the injection ? Was the surgery an outpatient ? Did you have any restrictions? If so for how long ?

Oh you’re a lot further in the process than I thought. Best of luck with your treatment.

I had one that caused agonizing pain for months. A specialist recommended an epidural before surgery. The epidural was game changer. I had three of them. By the third, I was pretty much cured. I still get flareups, but I follow a pretty disciplined regimen of stretching and other exercises. Like someone else said, the core is real important: once you get over this, start doing crunches, planks and other exercises for the core.

And good luck. It's not something I'd wish on anyone.
