This month is the anniversary of Iwo Jima where nearly 7000 KIA and 26,000 WIA US casualties. Mostly all Marines and Navy. My Uncle was a gunners mate on a Destroyer providing Naval gunfire support. He has since passed.
I was reticent posting stories about Iwo Jima this year. But I came across this man's story and felt compelled to share. These heroes are leaving us quickly.
Woody Williams, now 96, proceeded to single-handedly take out one pillbox after another, an act of valor that made him one of 22 Marines to earn the Medal of Honor during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He is now the last living Medal of Honor recipient from a battle that saw some of the fiercest fighting of World War II.
