The school became the first college to sell its home football games to a major network , agreeing to a five-year contract with NBC beginning with the 1991 season.

The Irish were just coming off a school record 23-game winning streak, a fourth consecutive No. 1 class in recruiting (which featured five first-round picks in 1990 with Jerome Bettis, Bryant Young, Aaron Taylor, Tom Carter and Jeff Burris) and two straight 12-win seasons that were firsts in school history.
