This would be a huge get. The guy helped rebuild the Lions.

"Martin was part of Detroit's initial front office staff that helped rebuild the Lions' roster. Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman is pulling Martin away from Detroit to bring an NFL model to South Bend."

Why wasn’t Mike Martin and this NFL model pursued before the Texas Tech guy who was offered the GM job?

How do you know he wasn't ? Do you have even an elementary understanding of how things operate at this level ? So many inquiries and discussions are made through back channels before an actual interview is even conducted. Stick with USC and maybe you'll luck out and Riley will have enough sense to stay out of Chad Bowdens way and let him do his thing. Riley needs all the help he can get as of right now USC is destined for annual middle of the pack status in the Big 10.

Interesting hire. His GM position with the Lions provided experience evaluating player talent coming from the college ranks; will the evaluation of talent from high school players pose a different challenge? I suppose talent is talent, but maybe echowaker or some of the guys here who have played ball can offer some insight on that.

But more and more the management of the college football roster is following the NFL model, so maybe this will be a really good hire.

Impressive resume. It is surprising they were able to make this move with a guy who has been in the NFL his whole career. He played at Vanderbilt, so he understands the demands of being a student athlete at a competitive university. Will admit I'm a little concerned about how he will evaluate talent at the HS level when he's been evaluating college players his whole career.

This is a promotion not just financially for Martin, it has more responsibility than he has had before. Blanchard is currently doing the same role at TT, ND would have been a step up in program but not role/responsibility. Freeman went for more experience first it seems.

Sounds great.

I was simply curious why the Texas Tech guy had the first opportunity for the job.

We will never know but just like buying an off market house or having something in your stockroom that nobody knows about perhaps Mike Martin was not interested in making a move, perhaps he had not considered it and then when he realized this position was there he or his agent reached out to explore the opportunity.

I don’t have a problem with admitting Blanchard was the first choice, it just didn’t work out. I really like what Martin brings to the table so we ended up just fine.

Next up is the second hire for the recruiting coordinator, which is what Bowden essentially did. He is easily replaced and I think Freeman is targeting a significant upgrade for us.

I think you have to admit both that you missed out on your top choice and that even when you find a plan B, it isn't your plan A, so you are missing out on your ideal guy and as a result your ideal vision for the program is less to some degree.

I liked your post for the optimism about finding a massive upgrade anything recruiting-related (this is the area that is low key one of the most important in the operations office and seems to be an afterthought at ND sometimes). Just hoping for a lot change/upgrades/ movement in regards to NDs recruiting efforts.

I've also noticed that ND seems to be a lot more aggressive with their coaching hires -- when is the last time ND ripped a coach away from a high P4 level competitor at the top of the profession in a parallel move (RB coach)?

ND needs to keep the momentum going on the recruiting trail. Get the 5-star and high 4-star prospects here.

I do not have any problem with any of this as well. None. Completely satisfied with the process. Again, I am simply curious why the Texas Tech dude was offered the GM job and given time to make a decision, then used that time to get a raise and new contract at Texas Tech.

Anybody want to speculate on what "bringing the NFL model to ND" actually will look like and what kind of impact "the NFL model" will have in terms of getting NDs 85-man roster into the tier 1 in college football?

Because that is the usual protocol. Make an offer, allow the candidate time to make a decision. How it works in the real world
