Just wondering about Notre Dame's future with NBC. I can't imagine the executives are thrilled with how the team has performed. Have not checked the ratings, but I wouldn't be surprised if 2016 has been an all-time low. This program is totally losing it's luster and I just can't see the appeal of NBC wanting to continue renewing their contract with Notre Dame.

Hard to believe they are even fun to hate at this point for rival fans. Just an uninspiring and joyless program right now. A shame because Saturdays used to feel like a Holiday to me. Maybe it still is in a getting a lump of coal for Christmas sort of way.

Overall, I fear a voided TV contract along with other things, and seeing the prestige of ND start to plummet. You can't rest on the laurels of the past forever. We might become like the Army of the college football world at some point (remember they were once a powerhouse).

(On a side note, maybe NBC has been a jinx. Their TV partnership has coincided with this long-lasting drought after all.)

agree .

The NBC contract goes until 2025. ND renewed it right after the N.T game in 2013. ND gets $15m a year. Good at the time. But, now that we see what all these power 5 conf teams get - not so good now. Just ok. I believe most power 5 conf schools are getting at least $20m per year on average or higher.

Will be interesting to see what the ND NBC TV ratings are these last 5 games or so.

NBC cannot like what is going on with this football team.

In a bad season for both teams, Stanford/Notre Dame was a middling draw in primetime.

Saturday’s primetime Stanford/Notre Dame college football game scored a 1.8 final rating and 2.9 million viewers on NBC, up a tick in ratings and 9% in viewership from Navy/Notre Dame last year (1.7, 2.6M) but down 18% and 16%, respectively, from Stanford/Notre Dame in 2014 (2.2, 3.4M), both of which aired in the afternoon.

The Cardinal’s win ranks as the lowest rated and least-watched primetime Notre Dame telecast on NBC since a game against Maryland in 2011 (1.3, 2.1M). That does not include last year’s Boston College/Notre Dame game, which aired on NBCSN (1.1, 2.0M).

Head-to-head, Stanford/Notre Dame was trounced by Ohio State/Wisconsin on ABC (5.2, 9.0M) — no surprise given that matchup was an overtime game between top ten teams. It also lost to Game 1 of the MLB NLCS on FOX (3.2, 5.9M),

The return of the Michigan State/Notre Dame rivalry gave NBC a four-year lift over the weekend.

nbcsports-168x137.gif
Saturday’s Michigan State/Notre Dame college football game earned a 2.9 final rating and 5.0 million viewers on NBC, up 21% in ratings and 34% in viewership from Georgia Tech/Notre Dame in the afternoon last year (2.4, 3.7M) and up 7% and 8%, respectively, from Michigan/Notre Dame in primetime two years ago (2.7, 4.6M).

The Spartans’ win ranks as the highest rated Notre Dame telecast on NBC since the rivals’ previous meeting in 2012 (3.2) and the most-watched since a triple-overtime game against Pittsburgh in 2012 (6.0M).

Ratings and viewership were also the second-highest for a primetime Notre Dame telecast on NBC (14 telecasts dating back to 2009), behind only a 2012 game against Michigan (4.0, 6.4M). The top three each pitted Notre Dame against Michigan or Michigan State.

Head-to-head, Saturday’s game trailed competing coverage of Ohio State/Oklahoma on FOX (3.4, 5.8M) but topped USC/Stanford on ABC (1.8, 2.9M). It was one of several games to score strong numbers in week three, with Alabama/Mississippi earning the second-best numbers of the season, Florida State/Louisville scoring ABC’s top early season Noon audience since 2003, and Ohio State/Oklahoma delivering the third-largest regular season audience ever on FOX.

Notre Dame may be struggling on the field, but that has not yet reflected in the ratings.

nbcsports-168x137.gif
Duke/Notre Dame scored a 1.7 final rating and 2.6 million viewers on NBC Saturday afternoon, up 31% in ratings and 34% in viewership from UMass/Notre Dame last year (1.3, 2.0M) but down 11% and 16%, respectively, from a primetime Purdue/Notre Dame game in 2014 (1.9, 3.1M).

Despite Notre Dame’s middling 1-3 record, three of the team’s first four games have posted increases in ratings and viewership. That includes two primetime matchups against high-profile opponents (Texas, Michigan State).

Head-to-head, Saturday’s game trailed both Florida/Tennessee on CBS (3.35, 5.5M) and Penn State/Michigan on ABC (2.4, 3.8M).

Don't dispute the narrative that "the sky is falling."

Huh? Last year's ND Stanford game drew a 4.7 rating. This year was 1.8.
It's early, but not looking very promising...... Year end will tell the tale.....

LOL. I've thought for years the NBC contract was jinx. A few good teams, lots of heartache, and even more crap for the past 25 years.

Are you nuts?! No way NBC will ever drop ND football games. If somehow ND drops NBC, other networks would be falling over themselves to get ND home games.

I just can't imagine if we continue to field such a mediocre product that NBC continues to renew (you would think the ratings will start to sink at some point), but I guess the contract has quite a few years remaining.

I wonder at what point the program loses it's prestige. Most millennials have not even been alive long enough to see ND win a championship or even be a powerhouse, so I question the strength of the fan base moving forward unless we can start fielding a consistently great product again.

People like to slow down and look at auto wrecks - ratings might go higher!

Last year's game didn't go head to head against the darlings of major league baseball, the Cubs. That has got to be a large part of the difference, obviously along with both teams having very disappointing seasons and being out of playoff contention early.

The kids who will be freshman the year that the contract next runs out are in the 4th grade right now. So who knows what kind of product we will be putting on the field as 2025 approaches.

Never too soon for some to panic.

its a very down year for sure, were playing a ton of freshman...ratings were through the roof just last season as we were in the hunt to the final play of the season. This is an extreme over reaction half way through 1 bad season. NBC isnt going anywhere until we have seasons like this consistently. But with BK as our head coach as the great Kevin Garnett said "ANYTHING IS POSSIBLLLLLLLLE!!"

Bottom line, I am just making a statement of concern that pertains more broadly. After giving Kelly assurance of the 2017 season, we again seem to be settling for mediocrity.

At what point does the ND brand wear off? We have basically been a .600 team the last 20 years. If this path continues, when does recruiting drop, when does our television audience lose interest, when do great coaches refuse to consider a position at ND (this may be happening already), etc...

We even had a decommitted player call ND "average". Yes, a bit of an overreaction, but this is the first season that I have felt so pessimistic (apart from 2007) and I know I'm not alone with this attitude.

NBC is dropping ND football any time soon. Besides all the other networks would be fighting among themselves to sign ND to their network.

Davie's last 3 years 19-16
Ty W's last 3 years 21-15
Porky's last 35 games 21-14

He stinks....

What Irish decommit called ND "average"?
Donovan Jeter. He said he did not want to play for an average school.

Kids these days just don't know about Notre Dame's past glory. Even I am 30 and started watching right around the time the program took it's tumble towards mediocrity (1994 season).

So the recruit never actually said ND was average. He talked in general terms. I think it's the fans talking through the young man. It could also be the uncertainty of a change in staff who he had developed a relationship. That issue now has been resolved. We don't know his real reasons for the decommit but at the same time BK gained another solid commit. You think this is the first time ND football has muddled through a rough patch?

Just putting two and two together. Notre Dame having a horrible season and ND recruit decommits, comes out and says shortly after he does not want to play for an average school.

So he does not want to play for an average school and no longer wants to play for Notre Dame...

He doesn't seem too bright. Sounds like he might be a good fit for Michigan. Does he like boogers and coeds that have Hillary's figure?

He said that this past summer before he committed to ND. That thread was totally misleading.
