I was at the Rivals Camp Series in Cleveland today. Like Saturday's trip to the B2G Tournament in East Chicago, there were a number of Notre Dame targets on hand and I'll have full updates on all of them. Here's some quick hits in the meantime.
- Irish assistant coach Keith Gilmore will be in Detroit on Tuesday. He'll hit a number of schools in the area, but he's see to two top targets in Rivals100 wideout Donnie Corley and Rivals250 defensive end Khalid Kareem. I have a story up on Corley already where he talks about Gilmore and the Irish Invasion, and I'll have video coming later on Kareem later. It should be noted, that Kareem's father at one time coach Gilmore's grandson, and that's carrying some weight in the recruiting process.
- While Gilmore will be in Detroit, offensive line coach Harry Hiestand will be in Cincinnati. Hiestand will stop by St. Xavier High on Tuesday, to check in on offensive guard Matt Bockhorst and quarterback Sean Clifford. Both players were at Notre Dame two weeks ago for a spring practice, and both players are potential class of 2017 targets for the Irish. Bockhorst was one of the top lineman at the camp on Sunday and he said that he's really high on the Irish and Tennessee. Clifford won the Cincinnati Rivals Quarterback Challenge on Saturday, and has been talking with Mike Sanford. If the Irish miss on Hunter Johnson, watch out for Clifford, who should draw plenty of interest this spring.
- The Irish will be Ann Arbor Skyline sometime within the next two weeks to see 5-star linebacker Daelin Hayes. He claims he's "married" to USC with his commitment, but the Irish are trying to keep an open line of communication. I'll have a full update later on Hayes.
- Notre Dame raided Penn State's class last cycle, but don't expect that to be the case this cycle -- at least yet. Rivals100 running back Miles Sanders said that he's solid to Penn State, but he is still listening to a few other schools like Alabama and Notre Dame. He wasn't sure if the Irish would be at his school in the coming weeks, but he said that a visit to South Bend isn't likely. It was much of the same when I asked 4-star cornerback Lavert Hill about Notre Dame. He has talked with Notre Dame in the past, but said it wasn't anything serious.
- We have another brother of a current Irish player that is getting looks. Jerron Cage -- who is the younger sibling of Daniel Cage -- is a class of 2017 defensive end with early offers from Louisville, Kentucky, and Cincinnati. His father said that there has already been talks with Mike Elston about Jerron and the Irish are interested.
- Notre Dame has invited 2017 cornerback Ambry Thomas to camp this summer sometime in June. He was originally schedule to visit for the March 21 Junior Day, but had to cancel. He holds offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Illinois and Iowa.
- Sticking with the 2017 trend … Matt Dotson is a name to know at tight end. He's the high school teammate of 2015 defensive tackle signee Elijah Taylor and has been hearing from the Irish.
- Damar Hamlin and Jeremiah Jones were no shows. Both guys are Notre Dame targets in the secondary, so that sucked.
- Some random thoughts: Ohio State quarterback commit Danny Clark had a bad day. He just didn't do it for me, and people agreed. My quarterback rankings would have been: Messiah deWeaver (Michigan State), Clifford and then Clark … I'm not sure if he would be a fit at Notre Dame, but Michael Onewnu had a great day at both defensive tackle and offensive guard. I'm told he's a high academic kid, but no contact with the Irish … Rivals100 wide receiver Donovan People-Jones was the camp's WR MVP. The 2017 prospect doesn't hold a Notre Dame offer, but he's a prospect that I can see the Irish getting involved with.
That's all I got for now. I'll have more later with video.
