It's certainly premature to be talking about a championship. But I keep thinking about the NIU loss in comparison to the Ole Miss loss in 1977. Ole Miss in 1977 was probably superior to NIU 2024. But I don't recall Ole Miss being a season long conversation the way NIU has been.

I think a big part of the reason was that was in the pre-media saturation days. You actually watched TV at night for highlights and then read the Sunday paper for stories about the games. The ND sucks because they lost to Ole Miss narrative started to change the very next week when Montana came in to spark a fourth quarter win over Purdue. Then the team started to roll. My memories are faded, but I don't think there was much talk about a possible NC until we beat USC, but even then I don't think there was much talk of what our chances were, etc...

Contrast that to this year; I was sitting on a sailboat in Narragansett Bay, RI, following the NIU game on my phone.

There are not many places better than Narragansett Bay.

That’s a pretty nice place to be sitting, good for you

Also did not have all the talking heads then as we do today, plus, all the social media sites to keep a topic alive.

I believe it was a 3- 0 game. I was 8 and pissed.

It was that disaster vs USC in 1974 that convinced Ara it was time to retire.

That was the WORST ND game of all time in my mind; Anthony Davis destroying us. We actually had a lead and seemed in control of the game and I really do not have words to describe what happened.

I think Davis "only" scored four TDs in that game. But he scored six in the 1972 game.

It is the worst loss by far of any of the twelve playoff teams, and we own this damn albatross. We need to either win the NC or go deep in the playoffs to put this to bed.

That always ate at me that he scored more TDs against us than any other opposing player in History if I remember correctly. We were up 24-0 at that 1974 game and then the nightmare started. I actually got physically sick and threw up.

Eleven TDs in three games. It apparently paid well. A friend of mine who attended USC said within a week after the '72 game, Davis was driving around in a white Eldorado.

HDK good points. I remember that year. Irish were fortunate to beat Pitt. Cavanaugh got hurt ( caused by Willie Frye) didn’t return. Played Ole Miss the following week and lost down there. Then as you say the Purdue game was the catalyst. Joe Cool took the reins and won that game. By the time the last game was played and bowl matchups announced, it was Texas 1 vs ND 5. Texas was favored by 10 or something. But ND was great on defense and dominated the cotton bowl. How they won put them as the eventual national champs. No one was talking championship for the Irish until after they beat Texas. Fans who don’t know , that Texas team was dominating every game. Not to mention had one of the greatest backs of all time in Earl Campbell. So the Irish winning like they did convinced the masses they should be number 1

I think the 77 Irish team might have been the most talented since the 49 team.

Texas had beaten everyone pretty easily and Notre Dame just obliterated them
