NFL TV ratings tanking.

Not taking into account the political controversy, I never watch a pro game from start to finish. Too many delays; don't run nearly as many plays as the college game. And, way too much over analysis by commentators. Nope, I watch the college game on Saturday, and get outside on Sundays; after Mass.

They have a right to kneel down during the anthem and I have a right to not watch their games. Haven't watched any so far but I might watch some of the super bowl.

I much rather watch College football but can't miss my Pats games. Brady gets a pass from me for going to Michigan.

Agree. Quit watching the Pro's a few years ago for all the same reasons (had nothing to do with the national anthem). And yeah, I did watch the super bowl when the Broncos were in it but that's about it. My feeling is the players more or less all go to hell once they sign a pro contract.

The guy that admittedly got into the Pro's, got his money and got out was the Boz, Brian Bozworth. Received $11 million up front, his 15 minutes of fame, numerous lucrative endorsements, sold anti-Boz T-shirts to opposing fans (LOL) and retired with questionable injuries after playing in only 24 NFL games. Was the Boz (made good grades and graduated with a degree in business) smarter than the rest? Yeah, I think so!

The night of the ND UGA game was network stupidity at its best. Who thinks its a good idea to put the four highest profile games of the weekend all on TV at the same time?

I think even a bad night rating usually beats a good mid afternoon rating. But yeah, that was a very crowded evening. I didn't watch any of the Clemson Auburn game.

Colin Kaepernick is hurting ratings? He doesn't even play in the league anymore. If people aren't watching their favorite teams because of a guy that played for another team and isnt in the league anymore, well, they're idiots.

What's hurting league, has been hurting the league and will continue to hurt the league is the amount of options for entertainment. There are just so many other options, especially with cord-cutting etc.

People who love to politicize everything will blame it on what posture players take while a song is being played before the game even starts, but the reality is, it's a multitude of things, the most of which are economic.

Yet, in aggregate, the college football TV audience is growing.

TV ratings are falling across the board. It's dying because young people don't pay for cable anymore. Instead they binge watch seasons of their favourite shows on Netflix for less than $10 per month and they don't even need a television. Cable providers have no chance of competing with internet providers in future generations. People now have the option of watching what they want, on their own time rather than being slaves to a television schedule. Sports are really the last reason to tune in live and there are numerous streaming options online that negate any justification for paying for cable on top of internet, unless It's bundled in a manner that It's near impossible to pass up.

Competition is simply pushing cable and television out of the mainstream. Nothing wrong with inguinuity and advancement winning out.

I stopped watching live NFL games past the first several weeks of the season a long time ago. Too many other entertainment options. Watch 35 mins of actual live football squeezed in between 2.5 hours of commercials? or finish that movie/show/series on my amazon/netflix que and just watch the highlights of the game later?

I do enjoy NFL Redzone (live) though .. especially because there's no commercials

This is where everybody gets it wrong in this analysis. It's not just a matter of people watching their favorite team. It's people watching other games besides their favorite team. The whole protest situation probably won't affect a Dallas Cowboys fan watching the Cowboys. However, it could affect a Dallas Cowboys fan watching a Minnesota Vikings vs. Arizona Cardinals game.

Good point. Toss in the fact that when their team isn't playing, they may be watching the NFL Redzone. I wish ESPN had a better college version of Redzone; but perhaps they know it might gut their ratings.

I think there is far more to this than anyone realizes.

I agree completely. I am almost 40, have been playing or watching football since I was 9, and outside of my Irish, I have the least amount of interest in football this year than ever before. I played fantasy the last three years (finished in the top 3 each year) but this year I quit. The games are just too long, too many commercials, and the big plays in the NFL just aren't there.

I also don't like the lack of accountability in the NFL or the NCAA. The Ray Rice incident really turned me off. They (the NFL) were totally cool with what transpired until the video came out publicly. Josh Brown w/ the Giants wayyyyyy too long - that guy should be kicked out of the league. I also try to avoid ESPN at all costs. And yes, I'm offended at the disrespect towards the flag - they're paid millions of dollars to play a game and represent an organization (the team and the NFL) therefore they (the players) should be voicing their discontent on their own dime and time.

As for the NCAA, what a joke. And what a joke these colleges are for using the athletes the way they do. When you're a senior at the University of Alabama and you can't even put together a basic 3rd grade sentence, that's ridiculous.

I would like to think that ratings are down because people are getting off their asses and doing something rather than just watching television. I don't think that is what is really happening but I would like it to be. Hell, I don't even watch the games live anymore. I'll watch bits and pieces on my computer if I'm at work and otherwise record the game. If we win, I'll watch it when convenient. If we lose, I erase the recording without watching it. Life is too short to spend a beautiful Saturday inside on the couch.

I support the players right to protest-- you should support my right to Not watch the NFL because of it..
Where did I say I didn't support your right not to watch ? I took offense to your stereotyping which is flat out wrong.

It was fun watching the Boz get run over by Bo Know's Jackson on Monday Night Football!

You are such a wuss if you are offended. That is what is wrong with this country--too many weak people like you who get offended by anything.
You are a dumba$$-- I hope you are offended.
Stay classy bodi. You were wrong or maybe you re just not smart enough to know the difference. I wasn't t offended, I just considered the source.

I haven't watched the NFL in years. I did watch the Super Bowl last year, but I honestly couldn't tell you who played in the previous year's one.

TBH, College football is starting to travel down that pathway for me as well. I still watch ND every Saturday, but I won't watch 2-3 other games to go along with it like I used to. It also is slightly irritating that every ND game goes 30-45 minutes past the scheduled time.

You are a hypocrite. You insult me all the time. You are about as classy as Andrew dice Clay . But you are too dumb to notice.
If referring to your schizophrenic behavior when it comes to ND football is insulting to you then I would think your real issue is the men in the mirror.

My set comes on for one game now. In my area I get to watch Colts, Bears, and whoever is closer for the 3:00 pm game. I get enough losing on Saturday and I'm through with pro sports.

Apparently, the NFL is considering November as "Social Activism" month as requested in a formal letter sent by four former and current players. Evidently, the NFL wants to finish the job and alienate even more of it's fan base. There will eventually be nothing left but the gamblers.
